Has anyone got one of these - like a Vax I think it's called. I keep thinking about buying one but not sure how effective they are. What with the dogs and the guineas and me not being house proud about walking through the house in wellies ::) I suspect our carpets are, well let's be blunt, filthy. Someone gave a quote to come in and do them but it was expensive. Just wondered if anyone could give any advice?

I think you can hire them, I'm not sure where from though. good luck. our carpet is filthy fom the piggies, we've just replaced with laminate! :)

We have a vax and they are great, you can't walk on your carpets for 3 hours while wet though which is a bit of a pain but worth it, my carpet in my bedroom is cream, bad idea what with 2 under 6 as well but it always comes up a treat! :)

Yes they can be hired from DIY shops but it's the thought of having to do so much of it all in one go! Laminate is the sensible option, don't blame you. We did have floorboards in the kitchen but hubby wouldn't get them sanded and varnished because of the mess so we carpeted instead and I regret doing it (especially when he dropped the microwave griddle thing out of the oven and left a perfect circle of singed carpet :tickedoff: . I'm afraid I've always been a carpet and net curtains type ::) but not so convinced now.

How does the vax work. Do you just fill with water and add some kind of detergent? Stupid question really. Can you do sofas too? (Just eyeing the mud encrusted dog stretched out on the back of the sofa!)

Yes they can do sofas I've done mine, you put the solution you get with it in, I've only used it once, not sure if you can put normal solution in or if it has to be a vax one. :)

I have a Kirby and it is great I used to shampoo carpets downstairs often and they dried quicker than a vax ;) I have Amtico flooring downstairs now so it gets cleaned every other day.

Okey dokey. Haven't heard of a Kirby but will have to look into them a bit more. Anyone else recommend them or different types?

I've got a Bissell Pro Heat II , It's like an upright hoover that washes so easy to use and has attachments for upholstery which you can use for the stairs too, I've got a very big messy dog ,a messy son and husband and an even messier me ;D ;D ;D

We hired a Rug Doctor from Morrisons when we moved out of our last place which was rented. The carpets were brand new when we went in so we thought we better clean them up after 4 years! It was very inexpensive - around £25 for several days' hire (there was an offer on). It makes a fantastic job of carpets and they are dry extremely quickly.

I think I'm going to have to get one of these. Might stop the house smelling so doggy!

Kirbys comes highly recommended from me ;) I brought mine 10 years ago for £1000 it has a lifetime garentee can pick them up on ebay for a fraction of what I paid ;) many of the older models are VERY heavy. I have a g5 which at the time I purchased it was lighter than the hertige I used in the past. ;) so if you go the ebay route look at g5 and above ;) or you can pm me and I can the kirby shop here and see what models they do now ;)

You can hire the Rug Doctor from Johnson's cleaners - not sure if you have them or not! I hired one from them to clean my carpets as I have cats as well as the piggies and they were fab. Although once clean the cats decided they would be sick on them again! ;D

£1000 - eek! Still, you're obviously pleased with yours. I will have a look on e-bay and get a bit more info. The more I think about it, the more sensible it seems to get a carpet cleaner as the dogs and us are always traipsing in and out and bringing loads of mud in.
