Hi guys,

I'm lookin for some boredom breaker for my boys, food motivates them and so I think this may be perfect, however is their any risk of them eating it all on one go ? As carrot is given sparingly s part of their "normal " diet and mine just seem to eat everything in site when it in their cage, also would members recommend this toy ?/ food treat ?

Kind regards
Alex

mine have had a few of these houses and love them.they are not overweight i find they eat alittle each day, takes 6 weeks to eat a bit of the door, ive 15 cavies and each herd has four cavies,i have 4 hutches, cages.i would recommend these,i put hay in mine, they are a great boredom breaker.but you could easily use an old cardboard box and cut a door in it and you will have the same thing, without carrot ,more money in your pocket.i use cardboard boxs, make mazes and tunnels for playtime, and screw newspaper up with a small treat eg peice of cucumber,it keeps them entertained for ages, keeps them foraging and costs very little.

Mine have only ever eaten them in small bits so I doubt if it could result in over eating.,

Mines love them. They tend to eat the "walls" more than the carrot roof, I've had it for a couple weeks now, they've tore the hay off the walls but haven't touched the carrot bit too much, just every now and again:nod:

Mine have them - there really isn't that much carrot on them and they really have to stretch up on their hind legs to get it - so can only stay up for a few seconds - i highly recommend them

Mine love this.. i tended to remove after a bit tho.. to keep it interesting..

Thanks for all the feedback guys, this fourm is making me poor I find these amazing sites and then buy all these great things you can't get in mainstream pet shops ! I have ordered the boys one, hope they like it !

If anyone has concerns about the dried carrots on the roof, JR Farm offer the same houses only covered in hay. My pigs actually prefer them, the hay that covers the houses is really green and fragrant.

Ooh, brilliant. Thank you for sharing. I may have to try these as like I say, Ellen isn't allowed carrot and I wouldn't want to risk it even in very small quantities

Ooooh that's awesome! Do you have a link for this? I wonder if they ship to Australia...

No idea about shipping to Australia, AlbiePercy. I bought mine from Amazon.de: http://www.amazon.de/JR-Farm-Heu-Haus-mittel-28x18x19/dp/B00D9OKWBQ?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00 The company that makes it is called JR Farm and is based in Germany.

I liked that the hay that covers the house is a lot, and better quality than that of the standard carrot house - it's very green, fragrant and feels more like ReadiGrass than hay actually. I really hope you get it or find a similar product :)

For boredom issues I also use toilet roll tubes filled with hay, or if you are feeling creative - an egg box - add holes and put veggies inside!

Thanks RosieMaia, unfortunately no shipping to Australia, probably a customs and quarantine issue... I'll keep hunting!

I'm not sure but everytime I go to my local pet store the owner tells me how much her ancient single boar loves his...however they're £10 and all of ours would want one each!

I usually get carrot cottages from my local pet store (pets at home or pets corner) or order them from Amazon
When the pigs were younger we bought the smaller version but now they are older we buy the larger one
Our new piglet uses the big one fine and actually had claimed it as his 'castle' he also loves just sitting on top of it nibbling the carrot roof
I have also found that they enjoy enlargening the doorway !:P:clap:

Strange what pet

strange what pet store do you go to? At ours it's £13 although they are expensive they last for quite a long time. If it's still 2 expensive try the uncovered cardboard house at pets at home
