@pig in the city to be honest I was thinking more of boars that are past their hormone stage as I really don't have the space for 4 separate cages if they fall out later along the lines so I want to give them the best possible chance of forming a life long bond.

What vet do you use? The closest one to me on the vet locator is just over an hour away which is okay but I can't find anyone who has used them for a neutering so I don't know how experienced they are etc. I'd personally be willing to travel anywhere to get my boys neutered by the best possible vet but I'd worry that a big car journey after a scary operation would just be too much for them to handle

I use Alfreton park veterinary hospital, vet Ellie Whitehead, they can admit overnight if you wish and travel back the next day.

Yes @PiggyOwner barc, milhaven and the potteries all suggested to check back in a few weeks time. I'm just about to email rainbow rescue in southport which is on the rescue locator list. Never heard of it before though so a bit unsure

@pig in the city just checked and that's 2 hours away from me so not too bad. I'm guessing they charge quite a bit extra to admit them overnight?
No, its not a lot, l don't know exactly but they are very reasonable. Total cost of neutering including meds is about £80 , l suspect it would be about £20 for a stay overnight. Give them a call, they are very helpful, Elly will answer any questions. She works part time she is usually there Monday to Wednesday and some Saturdays

@pig in the city I private messaged you on here yesterday and you said check to see whether you have any boars in in a few weeks time :) Every other rescue I've spoken to has said the same thing so not been able to try my boys with any other pigs yet. They're two years old next month.

I have considered neutering my boys but keep changing my decision whether to neuter or pair up with other boars. To be honest I'm really nervous about neutering them and don't think I could do it
hi sian,in the hands off a cavy savvy experienced neuter vet it reduces the risk greatly.I have had 6 of my boars neutered and all have been ok,no complications, and stayed in overnight.I do understand your concerns though,

Was there any aftercare involved? I have had operations done on poorly pig's and they have taken a while to bounce back. They had however had major surgery and where poorly before hand so that'll probably be why.

I'm taking in two single boars the plan is to get them neutered, is there anything I should do to help the recovery?

I've never had a pig neutered before so just want to be prepared.

@pig in the city - have you had any neutering problems or complications?

My vet has done some huge operations on my pig's previously and we haven't had any complications so I imagine a neuter would be fairly straightforward?

Hi @flintstones we neuter about 10 plus piggies a year at the rescue. As long as piggies are healthy and not too old (under 2 is ideal as testes are usually more mobile) although we have had older pigs neutered successfully. Its usually very straightforward with an experienced vet. They need adequate pain relief and often gut stimulant and syringe feeding in the first 24 hours. Some vets give preventative antibiotics. The commonest complication in my experience is post neuter infection and abscesses, but good surgical technique and wound care help prevent these. Occasionally the surgery can trigger cystitis but this usually settles with metacam. Good luck!

sian the cost of overnight stay at my vets is 25 pounds.it is 130 pounds inclusive overnight stay to neuter two piggies.post op treatment.to give metacam for 3 days, check wound twice aday.provide soft bedding for 6 weeks.vet checks 5 and 10 days post op,cost in with neuter costs.not to place males with any females until 6 weeks post op.still a risk of sperm being productive until then.to ring vet at an hour if have any concerns.I can say all my boars went on to have lovely wives!

I have just bought this one from a local pet supplies called Cookes. I happened to be passing their Sheffield store - so had to pop in !

www.donaldcooke.co.uk

it cost me £7.99

I also bought some lovely hay there so would recommend anyone who lives in Sheffield or Rotherham to visit their stores.

I've been interested in purchasing these for my boys but as I have two single boys in separate cages I was worried that because they are not sharing the house, they would basically gobble it all up to themselves and obviously that would be unhealthy. Does it take them quite a while to eat or are they easily gobbled?

@PiggyOwner do you leave yours in all the time or just a few hours a day? I'm worried they're going to gobble it all

Sorry - I didn't pick this tag up - don't know why. My Guineas have an extension to their hutch which I attach when I am home on days when I can't give them floor time . They use their carrot house for a couple of hours a day.

I'd been hankering after one of these but seeing this I am definitely going to be getting one tomorrow! Hopefully it will have the same effect on my boars, it seems like it's been a hit with your piggies!
