I have a question about carrots please if anyone knows...
So I’ve been feeding carrots to my piggies everyday as their bedtime treat (half a carrot each). I’ve always done this with all my piggies over many years.

It wasn’t until I joined this forum recently that I learned they were high in sugar (no wonder they love them!)
But I’ve never had an obese piggy or any other health related issues I’m aware off due to carrot.

So my question is, are there any other health issues feeding carrot on a daily basis could cause? If my piggies are a healthy weight is there any harm in giving carrots everyday?
Thanks

Hi, I give my piggies carrots every and have done for years without harm, although they dont have them as often in the summer when they are getting plenty of fresh grass. I only give 30g or less of carrot per day. personally I think the main culprit of obesety is feeding too many nuggets.

Carrots are relatively high in vit A, too much of which can be dangerous but moderate amounts of carrots are not harmful in this respect. Also vit A is fat soluble so more will be absorbed in diets higher in fat/oil, including the oils contained in grain and processed nuggets

Mine have only ever had carrot as an occasional veg but more because they’re not as keen on it.
I think it is the high sugar content that is the main issue.
Could this be the piggy equivalent of chocolate?

Ah thank you, I didn’t know about the Vit A. so that’s interesting to know.
My piggies have always been on limited nuggets and just recently moved them over to grain free which they love.
I think I can safely continue with bed time carrots treats as long as I do so in moderation

The way my piggies squeak for it, they seem to love carrots as much as I love chocolate

I give my herd carrot to munch on when I’m cutting their nails! Because it’s hard, they don’t seem to eat it as fast as other veg and I can cut their nails more easily

One of piggies has developed a new way to select his carrot....
he comes up to me and takes a carrot batton out of the bowl nibbles it and then throws it across the cage. Then he selects another one and does the same, he does this about four times before he find the perfect one which he takes off to eat.

It’s hilarious! Clearly I’m not cutting them all correctly for him, bad mummy!
