About a month and a half ago, my Grandad died, and we had to put the pigs in with a local boarding service for three weeks. It was a big rushed situation, and as much as I'd have liked to take them with me- my Mum has two terriers that wouldn't have mixed- so it was a matter of giving them to the first boarding service we could find. The lady seemed nice enough, she had pigs of her own, and whilst it was expensive I didn't care at the time- she was the only company in the entire of Aberdeen that had space at such a short notice.

However, when the pigs came back, they'd lost about 200grams each, and their coats were dire. Casanova was greasy, and was crawling with lice (he also had a few minor balding patches on his legs), Pablo was crawling with lice, and Handel had lost so much weight you could almost see his ribs. Handel and Pablo recovered first, three weeks worth of ivermectin, plus two weeks shampoos from the gorgeous guineas (the anti-lice stuff, and we did that in the middle of the week whilst we did the ivermectin at the end of the week- as suggested on the bottle)- plus a lot of veg and TLC sorted them out.

However, Cassie's just not right. He's been crying a lot more, he HATES being picked up- he'll claw and scratch not to be picked up. His coat was looking so much better last night, however on further look today one of his nipples has lost all the fur around it (it's about a 1cm circle surrounding his nipple). It's all crusty, white and slightly lifted- I'd take a photo but the camera's not charging - it looks very sore anyway. It's not been there for more than forty eight hours, but I have no clue what it is. Surely if it's fungal, from what I've read, it should be on his face- not on his nipples?

I'm at my wits end right now, I did not expect to come back from my Grandad's funeral to three sick pigs. Does anyone have any ideas what this is? If it is fungal, could it have been lurking since he came home? He's off to the vets tomorrow no matter what, but I'd like to have a rough idea beforehand.

I am very sorry for nightmare!

The discharge can be from the mammary gland.

Fungal infections are not confined to the head, although the most common form, ringworm, tends to start around the head.

Sadly, I have no experience in this and can't help you any further.

Thank you. Everything seems to be going wrong at the moment, the pigs are sick, and we've had a few really unexpected ratty deaths. 8...

I don't think it's a discharge- the white is connected to the skin, and his nipple isn't inflamed, wet or looks like it's been leaking. However I'll pop him on some paper towels now, and see if there's anything discharge left on the paper within half an hour or so.

Firstly, I am so sorry for the loss of your Grandad, and then to come home to three sick pigs - it's just not on. Have you made the boarder aware of the condition of these pigs and asked if she will either refund your boarding charges, or pay for the treatments you have had to administer to put your boys right?

My view on Cassie's condition is that it's worth giving him an anti-fungal bath. Fungal conditions can start on the face, but not always - around the nipples is another common place for them to start. It could just be dirt, but if Cassie has already been bathed and it keeps coming back, it could be fungal. Gorgeous Guineas sell shampoos and lotions to help fungal conditions, or you can buy a human anti-fungal shampoo like Nizoral from the chemist.
