Help,
Ten weeks ago I introduced two, eight week old boars, too my two year old and everything went very well.
Until three weeks ago when I noticed one pup (Oreo) continuously humping the other pup(Jaffa ), who became ill with a chest infection.
I had noticed the humping before this but it just got more and more continuos.
I took Jaffa to the vets and nursed him back to health. My vet asked to see all my boys to check they were well, which they were.

Once Jaffa was back in with the boys it all started again, I split them up again and Jaffa cried and desperately tried to get back to his cage mates.
So they are all back together Oreo is humping anything that stands still, my vet has said the only other option is to castrate him, I am understandably nervous, has any one else had these problems?

I have a big roomy set up for the boys, they have three of everything, loads of places to play and hide, loads of toys My vet says I am doing everything right but it has come to splitting them up or castration.

My vet has 4 of his own pigs and is having a similar problem.

How risky is this operation?
Has anyone else castrated there boars for this reason?

I’m looking forward to any suggestions.

Oh dear.
I’m sorry to tell you that this isn’t going to get any better and neutering will not help either. Neutering doesn’t affect behaviour - only fertility.
Two juvenile boars and one older boar is most unlikely to work long term.
If your older boar and the submissive young one get on fine, you are best to keep them as one pair.
Your best bet really is to remove the dominant youngster, neuter him and find him a sow wife when he is 6 weeks post op and can’t impregnate her.

I also agree with @VickiA. Usually boar trios do NOT work out. You should make the submissive youngster in a pair with your older boar, and get the dominant youngster neautured and find him a sow wife after the 6 week wait period. Please be aware after a neauturing op boars need to wait 6 weeks before bonding with a sow so they dont impregnate them.

Also, unlike rabbits, horses, ponies, dogs, cats etc neauturing a boar guinea pig does not change a thing in their personality and how they act.
