Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I have had guineas for the last 8 years or so. On Saturday one of my guineas was attacked by our cat. It was an unfortunate accident, my daughter who is normally very careful, had picked up the other guinea and was grooming her. In the meantime our cat, who never seems interested in them sneaked into their run and bit the other guinea bit round the neck. We quickly got him away from her and rushed her to the local vets. She was cleaned up a bit, given pain killers and antibiotics and I'm continuing to give her antibiotics twice a day. I'm also bathing the cuts with antiseptic twice a day and keeping her in a quiet room so she can rest. It was very traumatic for her, and us.
I just hope I'm doing everything I can to help her pull through. She seems depressed and isn't eating much but I guess that's normal after such am event. It's been over 48 hours since the attack, so she hasn't succumbed to shock thankfully. The vet said she was very lucky the wounds weren't deeper, no stitches were required.
Thanks for reading.

:-)

So sorry to hear about your poor piggy getting hurt but hopefully she recovers well, we'd love to keep hearing updates on her progress and any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Are you offering an Probiotic along side your antibiotics?

I was thinking probiotic too, as antibiotics can really put them off their food.

Poor thing, glad it wasn't more serious.

I am very sorry for the attack; it must have shaken you all! glad that you haven't lost it!

Is your piggy on baytril? This antibiotic is notorious for causing loss of appetite and tummy upsets. If necessary, please top your piggy up with hand feed; you can mush up pellets with some boiled, cooled water for it. Best use a 1ml syring from which you have cut off the tip just below where it widens.

I also recommend probiotics to support the guts.

I hope she's OK, it is my worry as well, our cat seems to be frightened of my boys and runs off when they move near to the fencing, but I do panic that if ever one got out she would attack them.

Can you weigh her daily please? If you keep a very close eye on her food intake & how many poops she does, as Baytril in particular can affect their eating. It may be you might have to syringe feed her some softened pellets or some Critical Care or Recovery food from the vets.

Welcome to the forum, sorry it's come at a distressing time like this. This is something a lot of us with cats dread but you've just been unlucky. As others have already mentioned please weigh her daily until she has recovered as this will be the biggest indicator whether she needs extra feeding such as critical care, recovery plus or just mushed up pellets. Only other thing I would suggest is Fibreplex, just 1ml (1 notch) a day would be sufficient while she's on Baytril. You should be able to get this from your vets. Is she still in with her companion or have you got her separate. If she's separate then it's a good thing to have them together at feeding time as they can lose their appetite if they're by themselves.

the same happened with me. we usually shut the door where the guinea pigs are but we left it open, so my dog tried to get in the cage and was screaming. It does scare the guinea pig but after a few days he should be fine, glad it wasn't serious.! :)

Thanks for all of your replies.
She is on Baytril, perhaps that med combined with the shock has meant she's not eating much.
I will weigh her and consider syringe feeding her too. She eats a little but it's hard to tell how much. She is separate from her sister and inside in the warm. I am aware that the separation alone might not be helping.
Any ideas on when I can reunite them? Today I put her with her sister for an hour or so. She appeared quite unwell compared to the other Guinea, but then she has only recently been through a traumatic event. It was good to see them together.
I really hope she gets over this.

Hi all, little update.
Sunflower the attacked guinea went in her run today with her sister and seemed to perk up. She's back in the hutch with her sis and she seems a bit better. She was actually by the food bowl, maybe eating but certainly has more life in her than when she was inside in my make shift guinea hospital.
Feeling happy to see her a bit more back to normal!
I have probiotic paste coming in the post so things are looking up.

:)

Poor piggy and poor you. What a shock for you all. I'm pleased to hear that she is improving. Keep us updated with how she is doing x
