cat litter?

may sound like a silly question but can cat litter either the crystals or normal stuff be used for a litter tray for piggies?

If not apart from sawdust what else if anything can be used?

I reckon that cat litter would contain alot of things unsuitable for piggies if eaten, and that this would be the main reason against it...? but I am sure somebody who actually owns a cat will be able to give you more specific reasons.

As for sawdust - never ever ever use it! Use woodshavings if you want, but sawdust is horrible for piggies!

Personally, I wouldn't. Just because, as Abnoba said, I'm not sure if it's safe to be eaten.

I do use fleece, though, and that's been really good.
Just a layer of fleece (the absorbant kind) at the bottom of the cage, with a couple of layers of towels underneath. Sweep out the poos every day, and stick it all in the washer two or three times a week.

It looks tidier, they smell less, no mess being kicked out all over the floor, it's cheaper, and my boys absoloutely love it!

i use fleece already but they have a litter tray which they are just about getting used to again (took a backwards step when went onto fleece) there is a bit of wood shavings in at the mo but more on the fleece which is a to get off.

What about the cat litter that is like little pellets of wood - I used to use that in the bottom of my bird cage - I'm sure that would be safe.

I have a litter tray which I line with newspaper and just a little hay underneath the hay rack and the girls do tend to pee here predominantly, but still poo wherever the mood takes them

In our cat's litter tray we use newspaper litter. Cant see any reason why you couldnt use that?

I DEFINATELY wouldn't use a clay-based litter, as it is very dangerous if eaten. It tends to settle in the gut and is then not able to pass through, creating a blockage. Wood pellet litter or megazorb type litter is best.

i have this too, i line the litter tray with newspaper, then carefresh and then hay, works a treat. iam unsure of cat litter as never owned a cat, but i am not sure i would want to use it

thanks for that ive never owned a cat either I'm not a fan tbh but i thought that it would be much easier to brush off than the shavings which are a nightmare

I've used the wood based cat litter, and it has worked well for me. I put newspaper as a bottom layer followed by the cat litter and then profleece on top. Then when I cleaned them out it all went in the compost bin - apart from the profleece of course!
