Cat problem

As the name suggests.

I have some cat problems, i always take my guinea pigs outside i used to have a run for them with no top but even sitting outside this cat decides he will try to sneak up on them. Its only been around a few times because we chased it off and it doesn't come back this way but now my next door neighbours bought a kitten. At this point because our garden is pretty secure and the pigs don't really run around much we sit watching playing with them for a couple of hours in the garden letting them roam free to an extent.

The kitten now keeps coming in our garden pooing and leaving dead animals around and i don't even want to take my pigs out now because the grass is probably diseased and now the kitten just hangs in our garden i dislike it alot and its disgusting habits is ruining my parent's garden/piggy play area.

I was thinking about getting an ultrasonic cat deterrent but does it work and because of the sensitivity of guinea pigs ears will it affect them at all. Does anyone have one that works.

I like cats but its not mine and i like my pigs more, they deserve theyre little area where theyre safe and allowed to roam.

All help appreciated.

I agree with you, I like cats but I like my piggies more!

The ultrasonic cat deterrent would be no good, I think, as it would upset and annoy your piggies, and they couldn't run off to escape the noise.

My sister has a rabbit and has similar problems. Cats dislike vinegar and citrus oil, but this could prove an expensive method. Another method I've heard of is to take the label from large drinks bottle and fill it with water, putting it in a relevant spot in your garden. The theory is that the cats see their reflection and therefore a strange cat who won't 'back down' so they avoid this dominant cat! Maybe if you have an old mirror somewhere?

Our next door neighbours cat comes in the garden and I have no problem with Poppy although she was sitting outside the shed yesterday where my boars are so I had to move her on. We have had problems with Wildcats, we had one kitten in the shrubs in the back garden, I told my Dad to pick her up but he rung the RSPCA I wanted to keep her and call her Mrs Whiskertons but Dad done the right thing as when the RSPCA came out the cat went mad, it was a wild one!

Now we use cat powder and that really has done the trick! I'm thinking of putting an extended fence up as although Poppy is lovely I really don't want her in the garden, she comes in our house sometimes, when I am not looking!

A secure run for your piggies might be the safest option also :)
 
Yeah meant to say about that, when I've had the hutch open I've noticed crows circling so its not just cats that can be a problem! It gives me the creeps thinking about the birds! We only get crows, magpies, seagulls and pigeons in the city!

When i had piggies years ago i tried the water bottle trick, put 2 3L bottles on top of my hutch, came out one day to find my neighbours cat nestled beautifully between them on top of the hutch ::) This became his fave place from then on, thankfully he didn't bother the piggies :)
 
My neighbour has threatened to get one of those sonar things but I can't have that because of the guineas.

We do get cats and like you and her I don't want them in my garden. I have already had to clean up cat crap, which I don't like. I am trying to make my garden more secure with chicken wire etc. Other than that I don't know what to do.
 
somebody on here mentioned a product called roar i'd never heard ov it b4 but i went on google and looked it up and brought some its brilliant ive got a cat who I love 2 bits but it keeps him away from the gp run and away from the gravel where the kids play just wish i could find something now to keep the dog off the gravel :)
 
We have both pigs and cats - and neighbours with cats. We use secure runs with hinged tops which can be fastened down. The cats sometimes decide to sit on top, but the lids are strong enough to support their weight and they can't get in.

Because we have cats of our own, the boys are all used to cats and are totally unfazed by having one sitting on their 'roof'. In fact I've laughed sometimes when a neighbour's curious cat peers in at one of the boys...only to back away in alarm as the pig comes rushing up to the bars to investigate! ;D ;D
 
i don't mind having a run, i did have a self made one but then i thought why not let them out because i sit watching them anyway.

My biggest concern is the poo and dead mice its leaving in the garden, won't that leave disease on the grass and my pigs will eat the grass and ingest disease
 
cats will not just jump over a fence in one go, like a dog would. they tend to jump ONTO the fence, see where they are going, and jump down from it again. so to stop a cat from entering, all you have to do is make sure they cant hop onto something.

My sister - who has her cats in her garden, and doesnt want them to get OUT - has put a net on top of her fence, that is also curving slightly inwards... works fine :)

this sort of fence works really well :)

other than that - why dont people use secure runs, either with a meshwire lid, or if its the grid/playpen - type, using a net on top?
 
Have you spoke to your neighbor about letting her kitty poo all over your garden?
I adore cats but prefer piggies ( a cat killed one of my pigs early this year.... It got into the run and i think Flower had a heart attack as she didnt have any injury)..... anyway, i would have a chat with your neighbor too... kitty poop is minging!
 
Apart from using the fencing it's going to be difficult to keep cats out. I know how you feel though. It's fine clearing up your own pets mess but why should you have to clear up other people's pets. We've got 2 dogs, one of which is a German Shepherd who sits patiently by the fence waiting for the cat to appear - funnily enough we don't have so much of a problem now! I'm convinced the cats still come in at night though when they know the dogs are in. I resorted to sticking canes in the exposed bits of soil so the cats couldn't get onto it to mess, but then they only go in the grass. I would recommend when you see the cat in the garden, yank open the door and run out making loads of noise and armed with a bucket of water!

(Your neighbour will probably realise then too!)
 
People think I'm cruel because i don't let my cats out but this is exactly part of the reason why. Why should someone else spend time making there gardens nice then have to clean up after my animals and have their animals scared. I adore my cats but understand people might not share my view. My cats get lots of stimulation in the house with toys, scratching posts and play time with us. Cats also get into fights and cause traffic accidents. Mine are very friendly with my guinea pigs but how do i know what they would be like with other peoples? The majority of people believe its unacceptable to let there dogs roam the streets so why is it different for cats? :tickedoff:
 
I agree.

Twice this week I have had my bin bags ripped open by a cat. I saw it doing it. I only have a small place and with hutches to clear out etc there is a lot of rubbish. Bin men only come once a week, so I have to put the bags out in my front garden.

When people say cats are so clean I say: yes, because they never in their own gardens.

I actually like cats but I don't want to be clearing up after someone else's.
 
in fairness i think your neighbour could have thought it through a wee bit better before getting a cat.... bit stupid when they knew u had small animals in the garden.... :-\

Why should someone not have the pet they want just because thier neighbour has small animals? It is up to the owner of any pet to ensure they are safe and protected in the garden, so the run should always have a lid on. The neighbour cannot stop the cat from going where it wants but you could try squirting it with water everytime it appears. I have cats but have also had trouble with other peoples, not bothering the g.pigs but beating up my cats. I have an old fairy liquid bottle filled with water and when one of these other cats come into my garden it gets a good squirting. It doesn't harm the cats but it does make them think twice about coming in.
 
I have my three buns in the garden running free and our garden is big and enclosed but a few times a new cat will stumble upon my garden.... i ususally see my buns sat upright or thumping then i run out hissing like a mad thing... they dont bother me much! ;D
 
i agree with cats being kept indoors for the same reasons youve stated O0 i dont own a cat but ive seen and heard so many stories from friends about their cats i would be too worried about the cat and also its not fair on other people to clean up after them
 
If you have a secure run I really see no problem. We have a cat, yet we also have a secure run..he often sits watching the guinea pigs yet he can do no harm to them. He always go to the loo in the woods behind our house too, so no need to poo on neighbours gardens (or ours lol) :D
