I've just come into work to find one of the guineas' eyes like this. I'm pretty sure it's cataracts as I've heard abysinnians are prone to it. If you know me you'll know that my work doesn't have the best record for vet visits. Please can someone advise what may be wrong then I can do my best to help them.

That looks more like an injury - the milky cloudiness over the surface of the eye is blood vessels attempting to repair the damage. A vet trip to ensure there is nothing stuck beyond the part of the eye you cannot see and some antibiotic eye ointment will be needed.

Cataracts do not obscure the whole eye - they are in lens which is inside the eye so you can still see the pupil clearly.

I agree with suzy, that looks exactly like spots eye just after he was born, I must admit I panicked slightly thinking he was blind etc but after a few days of drops which we got from the vet and it cleared up nicely. Hope you have the same outcome :))

As Suzy has said, it looks like an ulcer caused by some kind of injury (usually a piece of hay poking them while they're eating, or maybe a scratch while washing). They normally heal up fine with the right treatment, but I wouldn't delay in seeing a vet. Give them a call today and see if you can make an appointment, the sooner he gets the right drops in it, the better it will heal. If left, it can result in needing the eye removed in the worst case scenario, and will be a lot more expensive than seeing a vet today and getting some eye drops.

Thanks guys. I won't let my work get away with ignoring it this time, and if they do I will take action this time.
Glad to know its not cataracts, he's a lovely guinea. His name (from me) is bodger. This is because his brother looks like a badger... Bodger and badger :)
I will update on the progress with vets.

That happened to my Liquorice.. I've now dealt with this 3 times, but she'd managed to irritate her eye the two times afterwards.. it now appears to be ok, but i'm taking her back to the vets to find out why it irritated her in the first place and get preventative treatment so she won't do it again.. she was on antibiotic drops for 10 days the first time, but you have to watch the piggies eye doesn't actually get irritated by the treatment as did Liquorices..

That happened to Matilda after a hay poke. Very different to cataracts. Matilda got eye drops and the eye cleared up within a week...

Update.. been meaning to for a few days. I personally took the piggy to the vets myself and he's on 'fucithalmic'? drops twice a day.

Thank goodness you noticed and Bodger will soon be well again. He is gorgeous.

Bodger's eye has healed up nicely! I tried to take a quick photo today (not permitted to have phones on the shop floor)

He shared some yummy cabbage with his brother for dinner tonight

Thankfully, eye infections tend to go down nearly as quickly as they come on! Great that your boy is better again!

Here they are.

They left the shop a couple days ago. Very sad to see them go :( but I made sure I told the new owners their favourite veg and that they liked chin rubs.
