"🐹🐛 Hey everyone! Exciting news from the piggy front! We dropped by the Coseley GP rescue and brought home what we thought was a new guinea pig... but turns out, we might have accidentally adopted a teeny tiny, hairy caterpillar instead! The older sisters are in shock, but I'm pretty sure they'll adjust – after all, who wouldn't want a multi-legged, fuzzball sibling? 🐛 Any name suggestions for our newfound caterpig are more than welcome! 🐹🦋"

Definitely, she is keeping it for time being as signpost-name! My hubby and I have this thing where we try to guess a piggy's personality early on and give them names that match. Right now, it seems like she's going to be a feisty piggy! (Oh, and I really like the name Francesca from the TV show "The Nanny" because of her hairstyle!)
 
What about Farfalla (Butterfly) or Falena (Moth) in Italian? They would be unique names but still easy enough for a vet to cope with and would suit her when she grows out her long hair like a butterfly or moth growing their wings. :)

I have had a Pili Pala (2012-1018), which is Butterfly in Welsh; I named her so because of her ginger patch over one eye.
She was #3 in my string of ginger and white abys going back to 2004; remembering childhood piggies.

OMG she was so gorgeous! Oh yeah, I forgot the importance of vet friendly names, we learned it the hard way with Lenticchia and Nocciola lol
 
Thanks all for the lovely names suggestions! We will keep you posted on progress and name reveal. This evening got much better. Olivia the new dominant piggies has been a real good mom to the two rascals and intervened when needed. Mia and "Caterpig" actually managed to take a nap close to each other even if they are still working things out 🙃

I have had some serious fun and games at the vets with some of my own Welsh piggies over the years - Ffwlbri (Moonlight), Dryw (Wren), Llinos and Lleian (Linnet and Smew), Hyfryd (Lovely) and Hirael (Long Brow), Llawen (Merry) , Miaren (Bramble), Tegeirian (Orchid), Baeddan (Boar)... mine always come with a pronunciation guide or an easy nickname. :D

PS: It is hard to sit by and see new youngsters being firmly pushed to the bottom of the hierarchy by the former lowest ranked piggy. It is tough but generally shorter than with adult piggies since the existing hierarchy is not really affected.
On the other hand, you see the same with families where the babies stay on once they are considered weaned and lose the special protection they enjoyed. Some mothers can be pretty rough when they are at the bottom of the heap and want to stay ahead of their offspring. Things will ease within just 1-3 days for your gorgeous little girl. The worst of the dominance in any groups always comes from the piggy ranked just above. ;)

Haha that's right! I am learning that too! Not gonna lie, surprised to see this side of Mia but I guess they have to work things out. I am keeping a close eye on them and enjoying getting to know the Caterpig. Challenge is to figure out a final name before Mia's next vet appointment so we can get her registered too (if they will accept caterpigs patients) 🙃

It's a social cohesion thing and not a personality thing. But Caterpig is 'in' and accepted. ;)
PS: What about Caterina or Catalina if you are stuck on 'Caterpig'?

So funny you mention these names @Wiebke! I just proposed to Davide the name Caterina too and he looked at me like I was crazy. He is fixated on the names Carmen or Connie lol

Guinea Pig Names: considerations, solutions, inspiration and resources

I have often compiled a shortlist of suitable Welsh names and let the rescue know unless one name really stuck out for me or I did opt for the Welsh name closest to their previous name they were used up answering when adopting older piggies.
 
I remember when I was giving the name of the goblins to the vet and Bann went fine, for Cam I was like "yeah, can I do this with the nato alpabet?" My accent somewhat complicates certain letter sounds over the phone (and numbers, though that's much less frequent these days) so something like the nato alphabet worked wonders.

Nato Alphabet it always is for both my own name and my piggies' names over the phone... 😬
 
I'm kind of glad it's not just me! I don't have to nato-alphabet my name but I do have to spell it out every time it comes up or I get the "but you're not in the system!" and I'm like yes, that's because you've put an E in my last name and there isn't one.

I did think, afterwards, there were less complicated options I could've used for Camowen's name but after about a year, it was probably too late lol.
