I currently have 2 cats (1 year old) but would love to get 2 guinea pigs. Can anyone tell me if they have cats and guinea pigs and if they get along ok? I keep hearing conflicting things and I'm totally confused as to what to do. Thanks 98)

Cats and piggies do not mix.Possibly the cat s would not try to harm the piggies but they may try to play with them. The gps would be very frightened if they saw cAts trying to get them.

If you have piggies, you will have to make absolutely sure that the cats cannot get to them.

I do know people who succesfully keep a cat and piggies .

I have cats and pigs and seem to get on very well.
When the pigs are out playing the cats just sit and watch .

although I haven't left them alone , I am always there with them.

I can honestly say that if I had cats I would never let them in the room when my piggies were on floor time - even if they were not malicious and just wanted to play I would think it would, as Mary said, terrorize them, but I can't see why it would be a problem as long as they were kept away from them. (In different rooms)

It all depends on the cats and the guinea pigs. I could freely have my guinea pigs out with my cat Tiger (one of them used to sleep with her, tucked under her chin, and she'd use them as a pillow), but I never would have done that with my cat's son.

Cats can usually adjust to other pets very well if they're raised with them, but if not you'd just have to take precautions and be careful and wary.

It depends on everyones personalities tbh. They say dogs and cats don't mix (Ours were best friends and curled up to sleep together but my second dog was loathed by the cat and she left), they say dogs and bunnies don't go, but my sisters bunnies actually play with the dogs and snuggle up and the dogs help corner the bunnies when she's putting them away. They say dogs and guinaes don't go but our doggies tend to be ok, so long as the piggies don't come too near in which case the dogs flee.

Be careful though, kitties like to hunt small furries.

I agree with Jayms Fallen Angel, they are all different... my first dog hated my pigs and would clear the room if they came in it! My second dog would sniff them and leave alone, infact my Charlie used to bite her nose! My dog now adores them and they look at him in disgust! My cat.... well I would never trust a cat alone with a piggie, at floor time I would supervise all the time, I found my cat with her paw through the bars of the cage once... ooh I shouted :tickedoff: But after that she was fine... just beware thats all.. every animal is different!

I would never let my cats in where the piggies live in case the smell would scare the pigs, then one day Dita and Marylin came over the fence when I was in the back with the pigs out and the first thing Laska and Parsnip did was run up and start sniffing and circling them making their 'Chut chut' exploring noise, then got bored and went back to mowing. From that I don't worry if they are around together but I would never leave them alone together even though when Dita sees them eating grass thats all she seems to want to do too! The cats don't really seem that interested but at the end of the day instinct could get the better of them.

I've read on a few websites that cats get on better with piggies than dogs. My dog get on ok with mine and is allowed in the same room when they are out in their run. He loves that anyway because he always tries to eat any of their poop that is near the bars ::)

i dont know if this will help i have a cat who is over 2yr old when i got the first set of piggys she went to look after a few days it was the case iam not botherd she does leave them alone and i have no problems with her and i have got 6 piggys

good luck O0 :smitten: :smitten:

My dogs are the same, as soon as i take the run of the grass they dive in and eat all the poo ;D
Agree with previous comments each animal is different, my dogs are fantastic around my piggies.
The cats will probably be fascinated by them to start with and as long as the cage is completely secure then you know that the piggies are safe at all times.

My dog goes to visit my piggies with me every day and has done since I got him as a puppy. I have Max and his friend in a C&C cage on the floor and Monty goes straight in to say hello. Max always runs over to say hello back and usually gets a wash in the process ;D. Max actually encourages Monty to lick him as I think he rather enjoys it. All the piggies at ground level have seen Monty since he was little and so don't bother about him in the slightest. I can take the front off the sow pen when I'm cleaning it and the sows will come and say hello to him. Monty knows he's not allowed to get in the cage with them. I trust Monty 100% with the pigs while I'm there but I wouldn't leave him with them unattended cos even tho he wouldn't hurt them intentionally he might try and get in the cage with Max to play with him if I wasn't there.

Personally I wouldnt trust any cat with my piggies they can change they are unpredictable and very wise to when you are not around to keep an eye. You could get a indoor pen for them or just shut the cats out for a while.

I don't see why the two can't be kept in the same household, but I wouldn't leave them unsupervised.

My cat is great friends with my house rabbit, and when I had a guinea pig she liked to watch but never attempted to hurt him.

As a family we have had cats and piggies living along side each other for over 20 years.

As others have said they obviously need to be supervised but I think the 2 species can live alongside each other with no problems as long as the human members of the family are sensible!

:D Thank you so much for your all your replies. I think I'm definitely going to get myself some piggies now - although when they are out the cage I will be supervising at all times. I'll take time off my work when I first get them too - just to make sure everything is ok. Yippee - I can't wait to get them - they are sooo cute! Thank you again. I'll let you all know how I get on! :smitten: ;D

i have a one year old cat and they seem to be fine, she sits next to the cage and watches the piggies and if anything i think kinney teases the cat. ihe new piggy I'm not too sure yet cause he likes to stay in his igloo and drag it everywhere with him. i also have a little stray kitty that adopted us and all she does is lay next to the cages, never tried to touch the piggies. so i think its just pretty much up to the cat. and the piggie. they are all different.
