The girls new cage cage today, I am so pleased it's great :)):)) Normally it is kept in the spare bedroom which they are mostly in during the weekends as during the week they are in a big open run in the front room (due to husband working away rolleyes) :))

I really want to change this setup now I have a bigger cage and I have a fab spot in the dinning room, however I have never put the cage in there before due to having a cat which I can't keep him out of when I am out of the house or during the night.

My question really was to ask if anyone else keeps their cat and gp's in the same room? the cage is pretty secure and when i go out or at night I have a big fleece blanket that can cover the cage...

My guinea pigs cage is in our kitchen and my cat is constantly in theyre, I always keep an eye on her as even though she would never harm them, when they put theyre nose to the bars and she goes for a peek she will some times try and paw them (always nails in) like she wants to play. I always tell her firmy 'NO!' and she will leave them but in the evenings the gp cage gets moved into my living room as my cat spends her nights in the kitchen and I wouldnt want to risk her accidently hurting them.

thanks...my cat is the same will go and have a look and then not bother, he's a bit more interested today as he's sniffing around their new cage! But I was unsure about leave him with them in the night... What about when you leave the house during the day, even if you pop out for a couple of hours or half a day do you leave the cage in your kitchen? Is it only night time when you move it to the living room?

At the moment I could not wheel the cage into my living room as there is not enough room to get it past a glass cabinet and the sofa... unless I have a move around :))

Hi my guineapig (had 2 males and one died a few weeks ago aged nearly 7 but they lived apart anyway as fought badly) lives in the utility on the work surface and our cat is restricted when we are at work to the utility and kitchen.

She never jumps or to look at the guinea. We have had her out with the guineas loose in the garden (obviously supervised) and she thinks of them more as her friends as she doesn't hunt anything that big. She tries to play with them sometimes by gently tapping them on the head with her paw. The only thing she tends to do is is they get a bit whizzy she gets excited and chases them then jumps over them. Because of that we've never worried about her hurting them. So I think it depends how secure your cage is, can the cat knock it over and get at them? Also how interested your cat is in them.

Some cats will just leave piggies alone.

My cat Peeves never bothers the piggies at all. When he was a kitten, he decided to poke my old piggy, Nibbles, with his paw. Bad idea :)) Nibbles turned around and started biting Peeves. He started running away from her, and she was chasing him! Poor kitty :) at least he never bothers them.

i would never chance leaving a cat unsupervised with a piggie. Safe better than sorry x

I agree, whenever I visit my parents with the piglets, I am very careful to keep them away from the cats (they have 3 cats). Cats are natural hunters and the piggies are prey animals, it is nature, and no matter how soppy the cats are, I would never allow them to be unsupervised with the piggies-even in a cage. I've let Bo-Bo, one of the cats come into the bathroom (where I keep them there) to have a sniff of the cage, I turned my back for a moment, and he quickly jumped on top of the cage, and started sticking his paw in between the bars! I would definitely not be leaving them together unsupervised, and certainly not over night. I love cats and guinea pigs, but they just don't go. The only exception I can see would be if they were brought up together from babies...

We have one cat who I think wants to BE a guinea pig :)) Murdock is happy to lay by them as long as they don't move, then he runs away. Oliver, on the other hand, ignores them as much as he can

He has stayed in the house when they were in an enclosed cage although now he goes out whilst we're at work (he can sneak in their current set-up and I have caught him curled up fast asleep in their hay before now! Whist we were in of course!)

I do think Murdock is an exception though, I would not trust Oliver with them at all and I don't 100% trust Murdock either as it's in his instincts to chase.

I think it depends on your pigs too. My pigs are more interested in the cats than the cats are in them and will come to the front of the cage as they walk by..

When I had my guinea pigs they were in two cages in the living room. We also had a cat, and it never occurred to me to lock her out of the living room. She adored Basil and would have long conversations with him through the cage, and she just ignored the girls in the other cage. There was never any problem at all. I think it just depends on both the guinea pigs and the cats.

My cat, Priya, likes to watch the piggies and when she was a kitten she tried poking them through the bars (always with claws in). Then one day, when she tried poking Eric, he didn't run but turned around and stared at her. Again she put a paw through the bars and went to poke him, but Eric bit her firmjly on the paw. She pulled her paw out pretty fast, and has never tried it again! :))

I always ensure my piggies are secure in their cages, as I wouldn't trust Priya to have direct access to them.

thanks to all replies very helpful. My cat is 11yrs and has only spent a year with the pigs. I can have him in the same room as the open pen and he never attempts to jump in but if i go upstairs he gets moved into the kitchen / dinning room unless he curled up asleep then i have leave him a short time.

Current set up was cage in spare bedroom and due to being small, during the week when hubby working away they were in a 6x3 run in living room :)) but it is becoming a lot of work for me as i have to move a sofa around to get the run set up! It would be brill if i could put them in the dinning room and then they have free range in the evenings in the living room (without the cat in there of course). This would save me doing about 10 trips up and down the stairs :))

it is only night i am worried about and i have a big thick fleece that i can put over the cage so should my cat jump up he will not be able to put his paw in.

My cat loves my piggies and likes nothing better than to lick and wash them.
When I had a large group of rescue piggies living in a pen in my garage she could often be found curled up sound asleep in the pen with them:)

Must be something about the piggies though................she considered my daughters gerbils to be lunch and we had to keep them in a different room...............

My cats have never shown any interest in them, untill I got the new additions, but now they try and chase the babies, I am guessing its becouse they move quicker than the old ones, they can`t get to them, cos their run is safe, but would`nt trust them at the moment..{:|{:|

After much consideration, the cage is going in the living room for now, hubby only home 2 days a week so he doesn't get a say :(|), he'll soon get used to it :)).

I never leave my cat indoors when I go out, and she doesnt have a cat flap (too may cats in our area), so shes never really left alone with them, but just remember no matter how good your cat is they always carry that natural hunting instinct.

I'll never forget being about 8 years old (so 20 years ago now) and waking up covered in shavings and bits of a rotastack cage, I had a hamster in my room and while I was asleep our old cat had snuck in, opening the door, and managed to knock the cage over onto the bed, get the hamster and was running down the landing with him in his mouth! Thankfully my Dad caught the cat and the hamster was unharmed, but it taught us a lesson, in all the years we'd had hamsters etc this was the first time the cats had ever bothered.

We're house sitting for my mum over the summer and I'm terrified of taking the piggies up there because of her cats, I think I'm scarred for life after the hamster incident!

My cat loves snuggling up to my guinea pigs even though there not 100% on him:S
he gets his mousy ears on when he sees them running but would never hurt them i have previously found him in the cage when the guinea pigs are out ! i think he wishes he was one!
