Just lately, a cat has been coming into the garden and getting on top of the piggy hutches! Now, i'm not worried about Alvin and Theo as their hutch is 3 ft off the ground.

Gilly and Leo's however is not, their bottom level is not far from the ground so i'm worried about a cat pushing on the wire or something, i'm so scared it's going to get in at them!

I have little bolts on the doors but that will not stop the wire from getting pushed in. It's quite a strong hutch.. but i'm still worried 8...
 
*sigh* I am not so very fond of cats when they just roam outside and get into everyones yards/gardens and torment our small fluffies! Thankfully, we have boxers and all we have to say to our little female Trixie is 'get the kitty' and out she goes to chase it away. I love inside cats don't get me wrong... I just don't like the outside ones that roam free. Maybe you should put something that cat's hate around the outside of the hutch.. I've heard they hate walking on chicken wire.. So if you set some of that out around your piggies then they may stay away, and it might not have to be a permanent thing... Just for a couple day's till the cat gets the hint.
 
That would be one of my concerns too. Just the other week my Hubby saw a raccoon in our lawn. Thankfully our piggie is an indoor guy.
 
you can get this stuff from b&q and its a strip you put along your fence and its spikey...(wont hurt the cat... just makes them uncomfortable and they wont walk on it) and i have it accross the top of mine and i've only ever seen one cat in my garden and he got over jumping from nextdoors shed....rolleyes
its well worth buying concidering theres about 30 cats in my street... and ive only seen one in my garden... :))

We have the same problem and no matter what we do they continually poop and pee in our garden and torment the piggies :(

We keep a vigilant eye out and scare them off when possible, but one of our neighbours right next door has 2 or 3 cats then pretty much every house in the street has two! malletheadmallethead

Sorry I'm not much help - I just understand your frustrations.
 
i have moved my piggies into their new hutch a few days ago, personally i love cats, and my cat came up to the hutch when i was sitting there, sniffed the cage and walked away, we dont get other cats in are garden, dont know why but I'm sure my cats like going into other peoples garden :red but my older cat always goes into the house opposite us garden, but they love him so that's ok. So I'm sorry i really dont know how you could prevent him coming, unless * scare hum away everytime you see him, or get a big dog :))
 
we could try letting tinkerbell out, but as shes more or less the same size as an adult cat she wont look that scary :)) plus, she would possibly be scared of the cat!

It's important to ensure your piggies are safe and secure at all times as you never know what might come into your garden. I once saw a fox in my garden and at the time we didn't live that close to countryside.

I love cats, and my cat spends hours just sitting by the guinea pig cages and watching them. If I am holding one she will jump up on my lap and cuddle up to them too, but I would never, ever trust her alone with them. She also loves the rabbits and they will all play together, but again it's always under supervision. I think the fact she's grown up around the small furries means she accepts them as part of the family.

Oh and no-one can accuse my cat of fouling up their garden. She doesn't realise you can toilet outside and comes dashing home every time she needs the toilet!
 
:) I only hate the cats that come in my garden, i'm fine with all others. My friend has about 8 cats in total and I think they are all cute fuzzballs :))

The hutches are literally right outside our back door so when I'm sitting at the computer I can see them and if one of us is in the kitchen we can see them aswell. The cat seems to be coming over the fence using the shed next door then jumping on the hutches and over the gate.

Last night I caught it sitting on top of Alvin and Theo's peeking under the blanket I have rolled down over Gilly and Leo's hutch. grrrr
 
If I lived next door to you I can pretty much guarantee that Priya would be over at yours, peeking in at your piggies, although she would probably be thinking 'oh no, not more'. However, Priya prefers to tease and goad the staffies that live next door! Now that worries me a lot!
 
I dont like indoor cats usually, in the odd case they are fine but most cats need to roam, they arnt ment to be indoor pets imo. If you dont like them in your garden then you need to find something they wont like, we have cats that insist on coming in mine to tease my dog, Lucky chases them off and I would hate for her to get one but they seem to know what they are doing (I find it pretty funny watching them)

Could you get a water gun and squirt them when you see them, its harmless and would probably stop them coming in, it worked for a friend of mine when a cat took a liking to soiling in her garden, she didnt want her baby picking up mess and tried a few things before using a water gun, after a few days the cat stopped coming. (mind my cousins cat is wierd and loves nothing more then being squirted so would depend on the cat)
 
we have cats in our garden mostly semi-feral they only seem to notice the pigs when they are in the run and even then Rocky is determined to give them an ass whupping piggie style seriously if there is a cat next to the run he will be the only one not hiding, choosing to rumblestrut and chatter his teeth instead :S

If anyone sprayed water at Priya they would get her as a permanent visitor. She loves water, to the point where she is totally obsessed. She frequently jumps into a bath full of water. In fact, as crazy as it sounds, I am thinking of getting her a paddling pool for the summer as otherwise she is going to annoy neighbouring families by getting in to their child's pool. :))
 
Haha your cat sounds ace! I think she deffo needs a paddling pool to keep her amused, though you will probably still hear she has been in other peoples lol.
 
Why don't you try getting your hands on some kind of stand, so they aren't on the floor?

My cats are indoors. :)
It's not just the thought of them going and attacking other animals (don't get me wrong, it's that aswell), but it's mostly that most people treat cats very badly.. they don't understand that a garden belongs to someone, and by pooing in the roses they'll mess it up.. they just think they can go where ever! And some people can be very mean. pow-pow

question on the subject of cats mainly to *furryfriends* would you object for example if your cat was being fed by someone else as we leave food out for they Semi feral cats we get if it was your cat would it annoy you?
 
I wouldnt feed any cats, for the reason you dont know if there are any dietry issues, also if the cat is eating at home, at yours (general yours not you personally) and at other peoples you could end up with a pretty over weight cat, it would make it impossible for the owner of said cat to put it on a diet iyswim? Also cats have been known to stop going home and take up residence at the houses where they are fed. (I know they say cats arnt owned, they choose owners lol)

Whilst I would prefer my cat not to eat food other than what I give her, as I choose to let her go out, then I can't be annoyed if she eats elsewhere.

I think it's lovely that you put food out for the semi feral cats.

Have you also thought about putting extra mesh over the front when you're not around to supervise?
I adore cats but i know their limits, every animal has their limits :)
The spikes idea is a good one too! i know we sometimes use a product called skunk off, it's foul smelling and the cats hate it.......they can't get hurt as they wont touch or taste it.
