I am so new to guinea pigs but I want to get everything right and I'm becoming paranoid ( by googling every little thing)I'm worried i will be a rubbish guinea mum. I dont know whats normal and whats not.
I think one of my boys has a cauliflower Winkie. He's been to vet and it's not infected but it looks sore and it's constantly out. I ve cleaned all debris with salt water but it looks hard and dry and his 2 curly rods at end of his penis are hard. He has a thick dark crust in some parts....tonight I put olive oil over it and Vaseline. Will this be ok? He seems happy enough and is weeing ok. Hes only young but highly hormonal so he becomes excited easily and has ended up with boar glue over his fur which i has to cut out. Any suggestions is this anything to worry about?

Hi, I’m afraid I’m not experienced with this. I had an elderly boar but he never had this sort of problem. It’s a hopeless answer for you I’m afraid but @Betsy may be able to help. There’s no way you’ll be a rubbish guinea pig mum so please don’t worry. Someone I’m sure will be more experienced than I am with this. x

Thank you. Ask me anything about cats and I know the answer, but guinea pigs I am clueless... just want to make sure they are getting the best care possible. Maybe I am over thinking things ☺

You’ll be providing excellent care and love to these wonderful little animals so worry not. This is a lovely friendly forum and I’m sure someone will help you soon. Xx

Hello. Ok one of your piggies has a poorly Willie. On this forum the home page has sections that deal with issue including health. Have a look see if your piggie problem is covered. I'm sure some one will soon help.
As for not being a good piggie mummy. With you askin about you guy is a sign that you are going to be a great one.

How old is he? Has he been neutered? And how cavy savvy are your vets?

My Donald has been left with an outey after neutering but it is not dry, hard or sore looking. Unfortunately a lot of vets are good for cats and dogs but not for small animals. It might be worth seeking a second opinion

He is 6 months old and unneutered. I'm not sure the vets are too savy as she admitted she wasn't a specialist but knew the basics x

Check the health and care links at the top.
There is certainly one relating to the care of boar bums.
I can’t remember exactly but I have a feeling that at sometime I read on this forum that Vaseline is not good to use on guinea pigs.
There are some very experienced piggy owners who will know exactly what to do.
Don’t panic- your concern shows you will be a wonderful piggy mum

I think I will thanks ☺

Sorry I have no experience of this problem but thanks for tagging me in @Hoppity.K. None of my boars past or present have ever suffered from this problem.

Not sure if there's anything in your area on it but we have a vet locator on the top bar. This covers vets used and recommended by forum users. Some will be exotics specialists but some will be general vets with a special interest in small animals. It might help you to find someone who may be more knowledgeable. I imagine for a general vet who knows the basics a willy problem is probably not something they have seen or dealt with before.

I will ring glynneath guinea rescue as she will know of a vet in area. I have spoken to her before about my boars fighting. In the meantime I will keep applying a little olive oil for the dryness. I will stop the Vaseline and get coconut oil. It really is clean just looks very dry x
