Hi,

My daughter's gp has severe oedema, which is being treated with Frusemide. She's also on Enrofloxacin (2.5% 0.5ml twice a day) and metacam.

It was for a suspected uti but the urine tests had slightly raised protein but negative for uti indicators. It didn't indicate kidney failure, heart rate is normal. She seems to be wet underneath (initially I thought it was diarrhea but her poo is normal so I think the mess is from peeing?). she's getting washed regularly but still looks sore. Using a nappy barrier cream, which has helped. She's currently on fleece but has usually been on wood shavings and newspaper.

GP is going back to the vet on Tuesday, which will be the end of the course of medication. Eating well, active (but not overly so), seems happy in herself. Oedema is reduced but not yet gone.

Any thoughts, please?

Have you tried vet bed, its fantastic for piggies to sit on, especially in their beds. It really is so absorbent, never feels wet and just wicks away any pee. I use it for my boys, one likes to pee in his sleep!
Sorry I don’t have any experience of oedema but hoping she makes a full recovery x
I’m sure someone will come along soon who can advise you better with health problems

Hi!

Please keep your piggy on soft vetbed and change the bedding especially in the sleeping and sitting areas 2-3 times daily. Do the same with any of her cosies.

Give her a gentle clean with baby warm water on the underside, including all foot pads and belly, not just the rear end.
Ask your vet for a gentle cream (but not sudocrem as it dries out the skin and causes tiny cracks through which bugs can get in) for the affected areas.

Persistent oedemas like yours are very rare; I have unfortunately not any more tips in that area but I am linking in some other medically more experienced members for you.

Thank you. I'll get the bedding tomorrow.

Frusemide is 1/8th of a 20mg tablet 3 times a day for 2 days, and now twice a day for 3 (today is day one of the twice a day)

Oh i didnt realise that:oops: I'll get some bepanthan for benson's feet.sudocrem did a super job of healing them in the short term and was the only cream i had in the house. Glad i saw this though :tu:

The oedema is looking worse today. Is there anything else I can do for her?

Her underneath is dryer and she's healing well. I've got vetbed coming tomorrow morning.

Thank you for the replies so far
