Caution - Burgess Excel Herbage

Just a word of warning - we go through lots of this stuff and the last couple of bags have had small lengths of orange rafia-type twine mixed in with the hay. It is thin enough for a pig to eat along with the hay and for it to get stuck inside. Its quite hard to spot, we only noticed after it had been put in the cages - so keep an eye out for it if you buy this type of hay.
I've e-mailed Burgess with the batch code from the bag, will post an update if they reply.

Thanks - mine normally get that hay but they haven't had it for a couple of months as I didn't think it had been up to much lately.

wow thats really bad bailing twine is really annoying as well, i mean we take it out anyways but if the horses eat it they get really ill and if it gets lost in the stable bed they can trip on it, its awful stuff its also a right faff on to cut if you don't have a knife around, i say we just go ahead and get the stuff banned... I'm pretty sure they could find something less annoying to bail the hay with :p

Uh oh thanks for the head up, my boys have that.
I agree that it hasn't been up to much recently - I was not impressed with my last lot which was mostly short chopped pieces and dusty stuff. Most of it got binned. However the bag I bought at the weekend seems much better, bigger longer pieces.
Plus I've got them some authentic farm hay now which they can't get enough of! Its almost too long!

and yes it is about time they came up with some sort of twine that is biodegradeable!

As a new piggie owner, this is really helpful as I bought a couple of bags of this last week, and thought it was very dusty and not much good.

I've seen some with marigold etc in it ( I think) same make.... it could be called 'fresh herbage' ?

Would that be a better buy?

Hi Bren, it was the stuff with marigold in it. I haven't seen any more twine in new bags, and as I threw the bits I found away I haven't got anything to send to Burgess, doh!
