Celestyn Female Guinea Pig

Just a note to say I wasn't calling you a bad guinea pig mum. My post was in reference to what you said at 09:42 about the back to back breeding.

I don't know why you would think that, people here are only trying to help.

I'm sorry if my previous post caused offence. I just thought you were breeding to sale when there are hundreds of homeless gps out there. Please stay with the forum as the information the other owners can give is invaluable. Please remove the boar ASAP as I'm sure you wouldnt wish your female to become ill from back to back breeding. You need to take him out before any babies are born and as you never know when a gp is going to give birth it needs to be soon. As i have just read a post from you saying you will remove him once the babies are born. I hope the birth goes smoothly for your girl. Glad to hear her foot seems better.

New members are always very welcome on this forum, and all we would ask is that our rules are respected.

This is a very friendly forum, where we can help one another and share valuable information and experience. The reason we are all here is because of our love of guinea pigs

I was going to advise against breeding but I think everyone has said what needs to be said. If an individual decides to do something, despite advice and suggestions of others, there is nothing more to be done.

to the OP: I only hope your sow is not too young to cope with the babies and rejects them, can give birth easily (caesarians are expensive and the sow may die), is sufficiently lactating once they are born, and all babies are strong and healthy. Chances are one or more may die.

I think that's just the way things are, for every one you convince not to breed, someone else will go ahead and do it. Unfortunate for the pigs involved.

Glad you are sticking around because if your sow is pregnant you will need all the advice you can get. My piggie has had two litters (both accidents, first we thought she was a boy and second the piggies were put together whilst we were on holiday) In her fist pregnany she got scabby bits on her back end and in her second she got mites after giving birth (probably because of the stress) and lost alot of hair, the advice i got from here was great and also got alot of information from reading previous threads. I had no idea what to do, i didn't know if she could be treated whilst still feeding the babies or not or if the babies also needed treating. Also in her second litter one on the babies was born with a funny eye that had somthing wrong with the eyelid. A member on here was able to explain to me what it was and how I could help which was great.
Although intentional breeding is not to be discussed if you do get any problems I'm sure if you post them someone will help. People on here are great and know loads about piggies especially the rescuers because they have seen it all and also often get pregnant pigs in.
Also advice from pet shops is not the best place to get it as the staff don'y always know what they are talking about. When I got my boy pig Gerty I was put off getting two as I was told they would definatly fight but infact loads of people have 2 males living happily together.

Good luck with the piggies hope there are no complications for Celestyn

Sorry, but i think i'm going to end up leaving this forum anyway. I've found another forum and i've become very active on their because people actually reply to my messeges on the same day, they are more active in other words :)

I'm sorry but i find that very rude. The mods and admin on this site work very hard. We are all here to give advice and try our best. If that is not good enough thats a real shame! This forum has been amazing to me and you have had a lot of replies on this particular post so i feel what you are saying is uncalled for.
Sorry mods if you feel i am being rude you can remove this post but i feel very upset by that as i know people (like Debbie) pay for this forum for everyone to enjoy.

Has it not occurred to you that we are operating in a different time zone?

Totally agree. I've found this website such a great source of help. Thanks every body... x>>

People who say they are leaving a forum anyway are only looking for others to say 'don't go.' :{mallethead:(|)

I did point out the time zone issue in one of your original posts - the majority of us are in the UK and therefore asleep when you are awake!

Sophie

Personally I feel that the members on this forum are some of the friendliest and most helpful you are likely to find. However, if you feel another forum is more appropriate to your needs then thats fine. As has already been pointed out, most of the members are sleeping when you are awake, but I think you have received many very helpful and useful comments. In fact I would like to thank everyone for being so helpful.

I'm just catching up on this post and agree that the time zone is probably an issue. I would also like to agree with the info that has been posted about how much time and hard work is put into keeping this forum running and making sure that the forum is a happy and friendly place for everyone. Also comments that are made across the web can be taken the wrong way sometimes. I would like to say that I have had a lot of help and support from this forum and would definately recommend it to other piggie lovers.

All i can say that all that has been done here is to give you are best advice for the situation you are in! The time difference is why we arent active when you are. I hope you use are advice even if you do join another forum. Good luck

I agree. I have been a member on this forum for a few months and I have never found a friendlier more helpful forum.

I feel you seemed to have jumped to theories yourself - you say others have assumed, you have assumed that these people are being nasty to you.

I think the time zone thing is an issue, this is a UK based forum, athlough open to all people from whereever.

If you feel another forum will be better suited then maybe in future this should be your source of information. All I can say it i totally disagree with your comments about lack of responses.

*tuts* attitude wont get you anywhere! malletheadrolleyes we're here trying to help you with honest opinions and advice, yet you throw it back at us! you're getting advice from experts and lovers of piggies, none of whom are paid. i for one do not agree with speaking to anyone online or in real life so rudely. i'm not going to bother helping you again if you continue to act like a spoilt two year old just because you dont like our advice. i have one boar and four sows, i've only had piggies since march 2008, but i researched cavies for over 10 years before i had them. just remember, the mods/admins/global moderators/members are just giving their best advice for free to you. best of luck if you intend to leave, and best of luck if you decide to stay. please remember to respect as you'd like to be respected and manners are free

I do think it was more a case of our stance on the b word. But there are plenty of forums that deal with this. Just our morals are different.

Yea, that's what I mean, the other forum is in my timezone, where as this one isn't. I didn't say I was going to, just saying that i might end up not being active, do you get what I mean? I'll probably be staying for the fun games, once i get into it. lol I didn't mean to upset anyone. I am thankful for everyone's help.

I've even contacted the vet and ACS to get Zafron neutered(like people suggested) and I don't mind how much it's going to cost me. Just as long as Celestyn doesn't get pregnant again. The ACS is even going to pick me up from the station if I visit one day, my mum won't drive that far and i don't have my P's yet.

What I mean't about the other forum being more active is that the admin has at least one person(a highly regarded member, someone that knows what they are doing :) ) on so someone is on 24/7.

well done on getting your boar neutured! i'm sure others will agree, but there are a lot of knowledgable guinea pig fanciers/lovers on here, we just don't blow our own trumpets. there are quite a few people who are veterinary nurses, rescuers, people training in animal type courses, people with years of experience as they've had piggies for decades (think of all the vets appointments over the years, they've seen EVERYTHING!) and people like myself who've always wanted piggies and researched for many years before getting a piggy. if we don't know an answer to your question, we wont guess, a mod would put us straight if we put the wrong answer anyway! most of all we all love each and every piggy and wish them and their owners all the best. i do hope you decide to stay, we'll help you every step of the way, even if there is a time delay! rolleyesrolleyesrolleyesrolleyes

That reminded me, I took both my to the vet and all he did was check the teeth, he wasn't a very good vet. I asked about the hairless parts behind Celestyn's ears, he said it would be either mites or just how it was because it was exactly the same for both ears. I'll get this forums opinion on that once I get my camera working again so I can take pics and show you her ears. She hasn't lost anymore hair in that area.

PS: Do guinea pigs loose hair in summer? Because mine loosing hair and so are everyone else's guinea pigs. I read summer that they loose hair during a season. It's summer in Australia. Hotest day of the year is Christmas.

"Here's your christmas present, the hotest day of the year." LOL

Just wanted to save you another post and assure you that all Guineas are bald immediately behind the ears, apparently it aids their hearing.

i agree,my little maggie-may has massive bold spots behind her ears, all piggies do to some degree.

i think most animals molt from summer to winter and vice verca! to give them a warmer or cooler coat depending on season!

Yep they naturally have bald spots.
You might want to look around for a vet more interested in guinea pigs. I know it's possible even in Oz as Glynis from here had a good pig vet.

If you get Zafron neutered you need to ensure they use stitches in 'that area' rather than try to glue the skin back together. Also, with many issues you will need to tell the vet exactly what you want done, because they will usually offer advice and the owner believes that the vet knows best. In the case of guineas, they sometimes don't.

For example, one vet told me to have one of my pigs put down after she developed an abscess, I said no because I wanted to try treating it first, and now she's clear and as healthy as ever.

yea well, I'm going to take Zafron to the vet in brighton which has been recommended by the ACS. I just hope he'll be ok. I'm doing it as soon as I come back from Sydney and it shouldn't be as hot then either.

hope it all goes well for both piggies, the op and the pregnancy. i've been reading this thread from afar and can confirm a few facts,
- baldness behind ears is normal, mine like being scratched there...
- some vets think having an animal PTS is the only solution to their problems.

Be firm and once it's all behind, enjoy yourpiggies, they are just the most delightful animals EVER... :)

hey guys, just a small update of what's been happening.

Zafron has been desexed, yay! He's recovering very well has a VERY slight tooth problem, but the vet said that can be easily fixed if I change his diet, which I am in the process of doing. Celestyn gave birth to one girl and I've kept her, but for some reason she has fallen pregnant again, don't know how Zafron was kept Seperate from her. The babies name is Cheko.

The cage is very large so no need to worry about that. So overall, all guinea pigs are doing well and the vet said that they were happy to see a guinea pig that was so healthy(Zafron). Jess from ACS has seen all three guinea pigs and says that their health is ok.

Please don't flame me, i'm trying to stay on good terms and will try not to flame aswell. :) I do appologise for my behaviour but I felt that some people were accusing me and not acknowledging that I'd made a mistake, I didn't know how many unwanted guinea pigs there were. I hope you accept my appology even though I'd like one back I understand if you dont :)
