Hello again,

I have my pigs right in front of the radiator but it has always been off but the kitchen is getting bitter cold because of it, I put a fleece on top of the cage to help but I don't feel it is enough.

However, I have heard central heating isn't good for pigs, is this true? Even on the lowest setting?

If it is harmful, what is the reason?
 
Unless the radiators explode or you put the piggies too close to them I wouldn't think they would cause any harm to Guinea Pigs
 
The cage is right against it so maybe it is best to leave it off and cover them with fleece at night, hope they don't get cold though. :(
 
I have moved them over a bit so they are at the side of the radiator and I have it on ever so slightly just to take the chill off, I cuddled them before and their ears were cold. 8...
 
Awww. I should think that they would be ok on a low setting and to the side as you say. I think it is more of an issue with a huge change in temperature, but if it comes on in the evening when the cold really sets in and they aren't sitting right on top of it, I shouldn't think it would be a problem (?). The other option would be a snugglesafe if you have a microwave? Then you could leave the radiator off, put the snugglesafe in the cage with them and put the blanket over like you did originally.

I was worried about my two as their feet seemed cold (one is still in a run on the floor at the mo) but my bf keeps reminding me that some people keep them outside with no problems.
 
I have a couple of my indoor piggies infront of a radiator too and they are fine with the heating on, I have turned the rad down though so it isn't on full heat x
 
I know Sweden is way colder than Britain, but I lived a winter in Newcastle and at least I have never been so cold indoors before. The only house I went to where I wasn't cold was my Canadian boss' :). You are way more environmenally conscious, wearing wooly jerseys and slippers indoors instead of turning up the heat. If I lived in Britain my pigs would have been by a heater...
 
I read somewhere that the problem with radiators is that guinea pigs are sensitive to changes in temperature, so it can be a problem if they are right next to a radiator which is cycling on/off/on/off. Too many changes in temperature are supposed to wear out the immune system.
 
Is there any way that you could put a thick blanket over the radiator or their cage to stop the heat being so fierce.
 
There are only four of my Guinea Pigs that have been in the same room as a radiator, that is because this is the room me and the OH spend the most time in they live in this room with us. The radiator we use is a plug in electric one that is not that close to them, we don't use central heating. The other 12 Guinea Pigs live upstairs now its winter and don't have any heating they are fine.
 
Hi,

The radiator is barely on so I don't think they would notice a great change as the temperature during the day is probably the same, it is such a cold bite in the kitchen at night, it is quite a large room and I think the cold from the conservatory is seeping through. It just takes the nip out of the air. :)

They seem happy enough, popcorning and wheeking! :(|)
