We’ve had a bit of a setback. On Friday, Agnes started acting strange. While I was talking to her she let out a high squeak and hasn’t been the same. It’s probably noteworthy, it was their second time in their new play area and they didn’t come out of their hidey the first time. I tried just a couple minutes of cuddle time with them after, in a cuddle cup, first individually and second time together. They were just not having it. Since the second time, Agnes is behaving strangely, snatching food out of my hand and dramatically running to the back corner of her cage and staring at me while she eats. I had Edith enjoying chin rubs, but now she just seems confused, and is back to being a little more timid. Not as much as before, but definitely more shy. Is she mad at me for some reason lol, or is she in heat, or a display of trying to obtain dominance? Or all? 🤣 I laugh because I almost want to cry lol. Any of you guys years of experience and knowledge would really be helpful to me! Thank you guys so much! 💜
Edit: just wanted to add, the first time I maybe spread their veggies too far apart? However the second time I put them on a plate, like a foot from their hidey. They knew it was there lol. If I’m being paranoid, my apologies 🥴 I’m just a tad concerned/curious as to what could be happening. Thanks!

This may be better in the health and illness section.
If I was technically literate I’d move it for you but my skills are lacking.
Perhaps one of the more able mods can do it for you.
@VickiA @Piggies&buns , @Wiebke @BossHogg

I’ve moved these posts to a thread in Guinea pig chat as I’m not sure that there’s any cause to suspect an illness.

It does sound to me rather as though they have been spooked by going into their new play area. Does the area have wide open expanse of open space? If so that could cause them to revert to their prey behaviour and not want to come out of their Hidey house. What you can do is to include tunnels – even just some upturned cardboard boxes with a hole cut in each end so they can move without having to be out in the open. Also placing a towel or blanket over the enclosure or one end of it can help them feel more secure.
With piggies who you have only recently taken in, you do have to be very patient, very consistent and earn their trust. It may simply be that they have been spooked by this recent event and you may have to start all over again to earn their trust. I’m not sure how long you’ve had the piggies, but if it is less than a couple of weeks, then it might be an idea to keep them in their original Cage/enclosure longer to build up their trust in one place rather than putting them into their playpen which can be rather frightening for them if they are still settling down. As long as they are still eating, drinking, and not losing weight I wouldn’t think there was much of a health concern here, however, if you notice changes and think that they are not eating them, please switch to daily weighing to ensure any weight loss is picked up quickly.

Someone else pointed out to me it was probably my fault. It was Saturday evening, I was stressed out and emotional, and they could probably hear it in my voice. Combine that with their new play area, and I messed up 🤦🏻‍♀️☹️ We are gaining some ground, and I’m trying really hard to keep my emotions out of my voice. It will be ok. Thank you

My girls, Edith and Agnes during their second playtime. Yesterday, was 4 weeks that I’ve had them. They’re eating and drinking fine, still eating plenty of veggies. I just spooked them I think. This was before I got their new play area.

Well I tried video and pics, I don’t have permission it says. Oh well, thank you 🙂

It’s almost 8ft, circle. There’s lots of room and I’ve got a regular tunnel and a 3 way tunnel in there they usually love. Their appetites don’t seem to be affected, they’re still bottomless pits 🤣 They eat all their veggies when I get them back into their cage. I just spooked Agnes I think. We’re patching things up and she’s almost back to herself. Edith is just as sweet as ever but still seems a bit confused. I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing while being mindful how I talk to them, and what kind of mindset I’m in at the time. Thank you so much! 🥰

Don’t blame yourself. It’s easy to get over enthusiastic with new piggies and wanting the best for them. It’s not a question of fault for blame. Just take it at their pace and all will be well. Sounds like a lovely large area for them to explore but it’s probably just a bit too much for them to handle at the moment.

Posting videos isn’t something the forum can handle. But if you post to eg YouTube and share the link here we can see them that way.

Piggies pick up body language and intention very quickly as they instinctively anticipate predation and being pounced on by predators. Of course all you want is to be friendly, but they are not sure 🤔 If you do slow breathing and attune your parasympathetic nervous system as if you are doing yoga or Tai Chi, it should help. You can use soft little sounds like hmm and sing song vowels, but I think it is perfectly normal to be a little nervous yourself, so try not to worry about it. You can just sit by them and feed them. They should accept your presence and come out more (especially if there is nice food around) Reading a book, stretching, all good. In due course it is good to handle them a bit as they need health checks and personal care. I enjoy Saskia on You Tube (Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue) and learned a lot from her videos. Good luck with your piggies, yes, they are wonderful pets, such great company and such characters ❤️

It could be fear, but it is probably also reticence. They may be waiting for a senior pig to take the lead. Of course, you are the senior piggy (or the next best thing 😉) Piggies get very fond of the person who feeds them ❤️🫴🥬
Manners are paramount in piggy society and culture, so being a bit inhibited is normal. I think they learn this during their brief puphood with the members of their family, especially if there is more than one adult around. Be polite 😄 Don't be disappointed if they struggle, scratch or even nip when being handled initially. Handling them gently but firmly helps reassure them. In piggy society, you are allowed to object, to fight for your piece of lettuce by tugging on it and nosing away competition, to spray a bit with pee and to squeal loudly when upset. Doing these things means they are not freezing up and have enough confidence to express themselves. Piggies often take to their heels, but this is instinctive and doesn't mean they hate you. They are designed physiologically for sprinting and it is a habit with less tame piggies. When I first got my boars, they would stampede if I moved my arm to turn the page of a book. Now it's quite rare that they take off. They are used to having me around 🥱

I was just kinda talking and humming to them at the time, sitting on the floor cleaning their pen. They couldn’t see me, but know they could sense or hear the distress in my voice. I came home from work Saturday early evening to this crazy news. I didn’t even think of how it might affect them, or they could pick up on my emotions through my tone or inflection. They’re so sensitive and emotional, which I love but can be tricky, because so am I 🤣
At the moment we are doing great, Agnes loves me again lol, she’s back to letting me rub under her chin and happy squeaking when she runs up to my nose 🥰. Edith is just as sweet as ever and become more trusting. I feel like I’ve been patient with them, not forcing, but I’ll be more cognizant of it going forward. I really do want to start handling them more, but was waiting for them to be ready. Anyway, I’m so glad I have you guys to discuss this with. Non piggy people don’t understand lol. Thank you so much! 💜

Well done, excellent news. It's great that they are being so friendly and interactive ❤️
