Hello guinea experts!

I have recently changed my guinea pig dry food, I only give this in the evening to suppliment the veggies and hay, but it seems to upset them ie their plop plops (poo) is mis shapened and looser then usual, so my question is does this happen when you change the food suddenly??/

and if I wanted to get the very best dry food, could you recommend a good one please (not to expensive), there are so many I am confused.

Thanks x

Hi and hello.....you shouldnt change the food suddenly. It is best to do 2 thirds old and one third new and then increase gradually over a week. There are lots of threads on good quality food. I feed my piggie on Burgess. There is no waste with that. It is more expensive but seems to last for ages..x)

Ah! Hi! ... lesson learnt then! :) I look into that food then. x thanks x

It is usually the change in the amount of veggies that can cause soft poo. Brassica types (cabbage, kale, etc) are often the cause, if the amount you are feeding has increased then that may well be your answer.

50g of veg per pig, per day is the amount recommended by many.

Which dry food are you using? As I take in rescued pig and they usually don't come with any food from their previous home, they go straight on to the feed I give here - it doesn't upset their tummies. So I would be surprised if the feed is the cause.

Hi Suzy,

I brough Wagg optimum as I was in the local super market. Mmmhh, I think I might be feeding to much veg, may be? I will cut it down to 50g/day per pig and see if this makes a difference. How much dry food do you recommend I measure up, at the moment I just fill the bowl and keep hay topped up too, may be to much!? owwww

The amount to feed a pig is given on the bag - most state 30-50g per pig.

If there is food left over after 24 hrs give a bit less, if it is all gone give a bit more, until you find the right amount for your pigs. If they are under 6 months they should have unlimited pellets gradually reduced to the appropriate daily amount by the age of 9 months.

Unlimited hay and fresh water is the most important part of a piggy's diet, no mineral or salt licks, no shop bought 'treats' as most are highly unsuitable for piggies, if they are getting a good balanced diet and are healthy they will not need any supplements of any kind.
