Well I am feeling like a really good mummy right now :D

Toby & Barney have had P@H nuggets since I got them and they really like them. However, I have been wondering if they get bored of having the same thing all the time. I have just been to the shops and got them some Burgess Excel nuggets. I had to ponder the question of oregano and blackcurrant or mint and as they are fussy little furballs I went for the mint ones as I know that they like mint.

So I came home and gave them a nugget each and they thought it was just GREAT! So they now have a little bowlful just so I can see how they get on - eventually I will mix the 2 types of nugget together for variety. They are currently both sat around a tiny little bowl taking turns to have a nugget while also popcorning.

These nuggets seem like a really good size as well - the P@H ones are quite small so they straight to their molars whereas the Burgess ones are bigger so they have to use their front teeth first - that can only be a good thing right?

Golly gosh - I could be on commission for Burgess!

Front teeth are self sharpening as long as the molars are working well; they don't need any special care in healthy piggies. Guinea pigs use the front teeth to pick up food and to cut through it. The crucial teeth however are the pre-molars; those are generally the teeth that tend to overgrow and that you want to keep under control - once they overgrow, a piggy can't chew properly and also its front teeth grow longer as a result.

I have found that mine like the blackcurrant and oregano better (which are smaller again), but I mix and vary between both varieties. Personally, I find the basic Burgess pellets (the mint ones) a bit too big for comfortable eating.

Ours are also on the Burgess blackcurrant and oregano - the first time they had those pellets, they were so excited! Milly and Angelina still love them - those two dote on their dried food. Ivy and Flora went right off the pellets a while ago, and now they're sort of back on them, but Ivy prefers the Oxbow food - trust her to have expensive tastes!

So wiebke - are the larger nuggets actually not good if they have to use their front teeth? It's not a problem if I have to just use them as a treat rather than their main nuggets. Or is it just up to the individual piggies?

I have always fed mine the large nuggets from burgess excellent. None have had any dental problems.
