Will this be better for them? Will it help to put weight on and as it is full of Vic C, do I need to give them as much veg?

I bought the P@H stuff.

Nuggets are much better than muesli as they can't feed selectively. You haven't had your boys long enough for them to go too particular.

For more info on the different brands and people's opinions, have a look at the pertinent sticky threads in the food section.

Yay nuggets are much better. I still feed the same amount of veg as you can't give too much Vit C

I only has 2 guineas when I swapped and they were slow to eat them at first but now they munch them like nothing else so even if they are slow to eat them leave them down and they will get into them in the end

I much prefer nuggets as my lot would throw out the flakes they didn't like meaning they weren't getting everything they should have been out of the food

I also get the pets at home stuff and my lot love it :)

I can't see it going down much yet but tough! :))

Glad this is better, they look yukky compared to the last lot...can you mix it?

My girlies have a mixture of Wagg guinea pig crunch muesli and pets at home nuggets (half and half in the food bowl) and they eat everything :)

P.S the nuggets should be roundish, hard and crunchy. What do you mean they look yucky? x

Hi.

I use the Burgess Supa Guinea nuggets, always have. My lot love it. It didn't take long for my rescue pigs to adapt from their flaky mix that they picked through. They all go crazy when I come in to feed them.

The problem I see with adding the mix to the nuggets is that doing that could still cause selective feeding. You can mix different types of nuggets. I do that and find it's a good back up in case I can't get any one particular type of nugget. I use PaH nuggets as a base and normally mix in excel, I added some science selective in as well recently.

By the way it is possible to have too much vit C. Too much vit c can cause stomach upsets, diarrhea etc. Do still continue to feed the daily veg as it does take a lot to cause too much vit c in the diet.

I would just like to point out that my girls do not and never have selective fed. The only reason I give them half nuggets and half muesli is to give them a bit more variety. My Eliza has a few problems so my vet suggested that I switch to nuggets to see if her diet had anything to do with her problem which it didn't so they now just have half and half and eat it all :) It is all down to the individual owner and their pigs :)

Maybe its a girl thing Claire. My own two girls have half muesli, half exel nuggets. They wont eat all of one or all of the other. We girls know what we like! My own boys eat all exel nuggets. And my married couple eat meusli and blackcurrant/oregano mix. My latest two rescues eat p@h nuggets. I have my own mini feed store going on here. lol xx

That's so funny they have you well trained!

Mine were having half and half burgess nuggets and the burgess blackcurrant and oregano ones but I am back to just the one kind at the moment as not everyone likes the blackcurrant ones.

Was considering adding some Wagg Optimum too.

I have never tried W O, can't seem to find a local supplier. Yes, they do have me well trained. lol x

I use the Muesli with most of my pigs as they aren't picky with this (it's the only food they'll eat) but Gucci (avatar) is very picky so I use pellets as she prefers them. They're both good quality but your boys won't be able to selective feed so that's a good thing :)

AAAAAAAArgh, the old muesli argument. Well, my old boys (RIP) had muesli all their lives, select fed but refused point blank to go on pellets until they got sick. It's very difficult to mush up muesli, I found.:))

My current lot are on Blackcurrant/Oregano and a bit of Optimum PAH muesli. They don't quite finish it but they don't pick as much out as the others did. They love the pellets but get so excited about the muesli (I have to push Finlay out of the way not to miss the bowl!) that I'm still giving it. Plus I bought 3 5 kg bags on offer so I have to use them...mallethead

I used to give my piggies P&H museli but they only ate the bits they liked and I was throwing loads of the stuff away with the bits they didn't like.
So then I tried the nuggets and since then I've given my piggies P&H nuggets. They don't look appetising *** they are brown lol but it prevents them from selective feeding so its worth the colour. My Cookie loves hers. I'm always having to fill her bowl up

I'm desperate to get my boys onto nuggets because of the benifits of no selective feeding but they arent having any of it! I mixed in excel nuggets with the gerty and they wont touch the nuggets! I dont know what to do. Wheather to continue or stop? Or just keep mixing the nuggets and reduce the gerty. :(

My piggies were on Fab with alpha. I was told that nuggets were better for them. so over 2 weeks I changed to nuggets only. Then I noticed the piggies were losing weight and losing fur. I took 2 to the vet. We both ruled out lack of vit c, mites etc. The vet charged me £52 and asked me to bring them back in 5 days. I said don't think so. I'm not paying again when you have not got a clue whats wrong with them. I cleaned and scrubbed all cages. I treated all piggies for mites anyway, I added vit c to their water. Then changed the food back to the fab. Within a few days the piggies were putting on weight and now the hair as grown back. They are back to being cheeky little chatty munchkins. I think i'll stay with the fab alpha. Only thing is I bought a sack of the burgess excell nuggets. I'v tried putting a little in their food but they just push it out. Sack wasted I'll say.

All 13 of mine are selective eaters so mixes dont work well here,
Unfortunantely our only pellets here are based on lucerne which older pigs shouldnt have much of(silly company obviously doesnt know pigs),so the other option is timothy pellets from oxbow which my vet seems to run out of stock all the time and its the only vet in town with them they are also super expensive, so Glynis kindly sends me up a chaff mix which she feeds her girls too,I'm not loving it as all 13 boys eat all the hay type pieces and leave most of the other things,i want to get the oxbow pellets againrolleyes

thats the best picture i have

They do seem to be eating it, I sprinkled a bit of their muesli on top aswell and that soon vanished, I find myself having to top it up daily so it can't be that bad!

Am I right in thinking you can add water to the nuggets or am I being a nugget? ")

No you're not a nugget :) I don't think water is added for general use. However, I have mushed some up with water and placed in a little dish that babies, who I had a few concerns about, lapped at. (They can be syringe fed like this also, as an alternative to critical care) xx

How long have you been mixing the two?

My boys were originally on Gerty and I've started mixing Burgess nuggets in with it. To start with they avoided them but over the course of a few weeks they began to eat them and now they really like them.

I'll continue mixing till the Gerty's used up then shift them just onto nuggets. It's a shame because they seem to enjoy the variety, but I guess it's for their own good!

No expert on food, but I should think meusli mix is just as good if they eat it 'all', but because most piggies are selective they are not getting all nutrients they should? xx

I guess, so. They never touch the pellets in the Gerty, although they do eat the rest, so it makes sense to move them onto something where they're not leaving bits. I think they'll miss the flakes though, they seem to really love them.

But then I feel the same about chocolate, but I try to limit my intake!

About 2 weeks now,but i do have alot of gerty left still. They don't touch the yellow corn bits in the gerty or the biscuit things,so i thought changing to nuggets would be best for them. So the best option is to keep mixing until gerty is all gone and then see how it goes? If they refuse point blank and lose weight after a week shall i put them back onto gerty?mallethead

Also you can but the flakes from the gerty at pampared piggys, could i add that to the nuggets once the gerty has gone,as they seem to like that? It the green bits or just leave it the nuggets or just add as a treat? Thanks.

I am trying to get my 2 off Gerty and on the pellets as well. I have mixed the food and so far they are still ignoring the pellets and eating what they like from the Gerty which isn't that much, they are a very fussy pair! Its only been about a week so far and this thread has given me hope that it is worth persevering so thank you all x>>

Hello - our pigs used to be desperately fussy with their food and in particular disregarded the nuggety bits, so I though my chances of changing them to just nuggets were remote, but oddly enough as the old food receded and the nuggets started to dominate, they just - ate them. I was stunned, amazed and very pleased, as apart from the benefits to them, it's massively less wasteful than when they were picking out about half of the ingredients in their cereal.

The will eat the nuggets in the end. Just brave it out and as long as you are giving them unlimited hay and lots of their fav veg it doesn't matter if they start slow on the nuggets. Bessie and Gypsy took ages to get started properly on them but they did it and now wolf down the nuggets.

It's very unlikely (although not impossible) thay they will starve themselves. We worry alot but in the long run it's good for them to get the complete food rather than leave some. My guineas never ate all the museli so those that do are very good guineas indeed - that or very hungry :))

If you think it's dull then Burgess do blackcurrant and oregano nuggets that I mix in with the plain ones. My 6 girls love the both types as do bessie and gypsy but Mork only likes the plain ones. Nutritionally they are the same so I don't think it matters it just gives them a bit of extra tasty flavour.
