Hi all! I’ve got a set of doe pairs, and one pair really loves doing their business in their hay, which is great, but with their current setup it ends up making their fleece super dirty, super fast. I’m thinking of changing up how much fleece I use in their cage and would love some opinions on this idea:
  • One large fleece piece as a base layer
  • A 1x2 sized “litter” tray to hold their hay
  • Pee pads scattered around the cage (I’m just not sure where the best spots for those would be yet)
Would love to hear if anyone’s tried something similar or has any advice!

Hi!
Our piggies are boys. We currently have one who’s favourite toileting spots stay pretty consistent & the other who just doesn’t care where he goes!
We have 2/3big base absorbent fleece pee pads & multiple little ones, like your planning.
I just put the little ones in the current favourite spots, and change daily/every other day as needed. Sometimes the favourite spots change- so I just move the pads around depending on the current trends!

So, yes, it’s a good idea, I think you will just have to guess & then find which spots suit your girls best for the smaller pads.
For example, I have small pads under all houses & for Wally pig I have a thin long one along the divide he shares with his neighbour & Loki pig currently has a small pad outside one of his houses next to the door as this week that’s the favourite wee spot!

Good luck. I am sure your girls will quickly help you find the wetter places!

I have a 6x6 c&c. I have fleece in the middle around 3 c&c cage in length. And then either side I have around 1.5 c&c in length paper bedding and hay piles.

Fleece in the middle has some timothy hay on so they do pee on it. But its kept much drier as their meadow hay they can bury in is the other areas. It works for me. If I had all fleece I would be constantly washing

I have a 160 x 80cm cage for my two sows. One half is litter trays lined with paper and lots of hay where I scatter feed veg at night. This half is covered to encourage them to be there a lot.

The other half of the cage contains an ikea doll's bed and a pound land stool on fleece. One piece on the ground and two pads, one under the doll's bed and the other under the stool. I change the two pads regularly and the larger piece once or twice a week.

They wee a lot in their hay trays and poo (a lot) everywhere!

I have a 6x2 fleece lined cage with noodle mats on top.
I change the mats every few days and they help keep the fleece dry and cleanish.
The fleece liners usually only need to be changed every 8 - 10 days.
Mine just wee and poop wherever they happen to be !

Like @AidaB I have one who goes anywhere and one who never potties in his bed or hay. For piddle pants I have a small bath mat under his hay that gets changed daily and bath mats over the fleece in various places. The fleece is a patchwork of different sizes so I don't necessarily need to change it all at once. My clean boy (bless him) always goes over to the pee pads, which get changed daily.

Yes, I do exactly that setup, except I have a base layer of noodle bath mats. So bath mats + 1x2 haybox + pee pads covering everywhere else. I only need to change the pee pads about every 2 weeks because I use a zorb middle layer. The haybox I change every 2 days or so, depending on how much they’ve peed in there.

I cover my haybox with a fleece forest, so they spend a lot of time in there grazing.
