I have just got a new pig who is now bonded with my single bereaved guinea pig. I want to change their vegetable time to afternoon (4-5pm) instead of night (7-8pm) because i want to make sure they are both eating well throughout the winter months - especially the younger one - so i was wondering if i have to somehow slowly change the time or can i just change it to afternoon ( they would still get a snack before they get closed up) Any answers would help xx

I only ever stick to rough times, at weekend I lay in and my pigs don't get veg til 11am, normally they get it at 7am lol. A hungry pig is a keen pig, not with hay obviously and I wouldn't ever stop the vit c or anything too long.

If i changed it to the afternoon, would they get hungry overnight ?

No because hay should be the biggest part of their diet and it should be available on large quantities 24/7. Veg and pellets are purely supplementary and make up only the smallest part of their dier

Ok thanks for your advice, they have access to hay 24/7 so i think they should be ok xx

When bernie was a young pig, I left him home alone on my wedding night. So Friday afternoon all of Sat and then came back Sunday, only gave him veg on the Friday night. He was a single pig, ( now a husboarbto dot) but in quarentine back then, I had just got him and he was fine, I hated leaving him. But I put 2 water bottles on the cage, and rammed it with hay. I'd never do it again

Tell a lie, I came back sat later noon. 🙄

This thread has gone slightly off track as original poster was asking advice about routine feeding times .
However , I am a bit concerned about the number of members who are prepared to leave their guinea pigs unattended for long periods of time . I fully understand we all have lives which involve things other than guinea pigs .. but whenever I go away ...even if it is just for one night , I make arrangements for someone to check on my guinea pigs morning and evening .
It’s not just about feeding and watering them .... it’s about making sure they haven’t become ill or injured themselves . We are all aware how quickly a guinea pig can become unwell and , quite frankly , in my opinion, anything less than twice daily checks is sub optimal .

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I never leave my guinea pigs alone overnight i'll always have someone come and look at them. I check them atleast 3 times a day and wouldn't dream of leaving my pigs alone overnight without someone checking on them 😦

I am pleased to hear this . My post wasn’t directed at you . It would appear from the posts above that some members don’t have such high standards .

It's fine to alter feeding times, but l agree with @Veggies Galore that piggies should never be left unattended for more than 6 to 8 hours, they can become unwell very quickly and you could come home to a dead piggy.
