Hi

I am trying to change the food of my new guineas pigs jive and tango from the gertie guinea muesli to the excel nuggets and lets say they are less than impressed. So far i have been substituting 25% of the new stuff but they just pick round it and give up and go back to the hay or to sleep. How long should it take to switch them over i was thinking 10 to 14 days?

Any ideas welcomed, Thanks, Eleanor

It can take 2-4 weeks depending on pig. All mine were on Gerty when they came to me and all 10 (was 11) were successfully changed over to excel nuggets at different times. As you are doing, start with little nuggets and gradually increase ratio until all nuggets. Trust me, they will eat them as pigs are inherently...well pigs! :))

It took me three weeks and as many attempts to wean Dizzy of Gertie's. Basically, stick it out. Change the nuggets regularly.

As Dizzy was a bit elderly, I kept giving her a little bit of probiotic during that period.

I changed mine over slowly and dont back down they will eat them. Nuggets or muslie is only a VERY SMALL portion of thier food intake anyway where hay is thier main staple in thier diet followed by veggies.

Mine took about 2 weeks gradually making it more nuggets.

They only have excel super guinea now and they finish it every time.

The museli would get left (well the bits they didn't like anyway).
