Hi All,

Well Fleur, Flora and Cuzzy have started select feeding. Cuzzy isn't too bad but he leaves enough for me to think that he isn't eating enough. The girls have been select feeding for a few days now so think I should change over to pellets for the three of them.

Sunshine and Twinkle love the museli so I'll keep them on it but can I give them pellets as well? Or would that be too much? Also should I just change over totally or do it gradually and which ones are the best to get?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions, I've not used pellets before so I'm clueless.

I should think it would be ok to mix a few pellets with their mix, as far as the best ones go trial and error is the best way to go, if they will eat them, stick to them. I use science selective Gilly eats them fine if thats any help.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for that, I'll give them a go! I know Sunshine doesn't like the pellets as we got some when we first brought him home and he turned his nose up at them. He did like Gerty but that was before I knew it contained artificial colours. The girls are eating the green bits and yellow flake parts but leaving the oat type things (I'm good at this...lol) and the ones that look like seeds. They are on P@H Guinea Pig Museli.

Take care,

Louise

My new girls Olive, Fern and Pepper are currently fed on P@H Muesli as they have been fed on this for the past 2 years. They selective feed so i'm currently in the process (unsuccessfully) of weaning them onto P@H Nuggets.
If you plan on changing their food it is advisable to do so over a week period. :)

I feed a mix of nuggets and muesli (both p@h) and mine eat everything - and thats for every single guinea that comes in :)

Each new piggy i have had has been on the muesli stuff, but i gradually (within 2 weeks) managed to get them all on the pellets.

It stops the selective eating and helps them to appreciate their fruit, veg and treats. I have also found that the pellets cause them to have better healthier looking poo poo's! (not that i'm a poo expert!) Does that make sence?

I just think they poo better on the pellets.

Ok, I'll shut up now about poo...

I change them over the same way BUT slower ;)

When mine came home I changed them from pets at home nugget to Burgess Supa Guinea Excel in about a week and they were fine ;)

is it an orange bag hiun? my 4 are all on the guinea pig excel, £4.19 a bag! Bargain. I found that gerty pig and the other (didnt look very appealing that i forgot its name allready!) was slightly over priced and had a lot of stuff in it that my pigs normally leave. So hey ho, super excel works for mine and they love it, and yes, they do poo better!

super excel are cheaper than p at h hun, and for my piggies, they enjoy them better, but they still get treated far too much! Today i spent an hour picking dandilion leaves for the 4 of them!

Most of mine eat Excel, some are resisting the change over though.

It's not just selective feeding to be the reason for switching them onto pellets its the fibre content. Mixes are really low in fibre, some as low as 6-7%, Excel has 15% fibre and I believe Science Selective is higher than that!

I have just completed the changeover from Gerty Guinea to Supa guinea excel for my two newest boys, Hamish and Elmo. It took a total of 3 wheeks! As has been said, a few nuggests to start off mixed with the museli and gradually build up from there :)

Mine are doing great on the change over. They are still on a mix of dried and pellets, Cuzzy woofs the lot, Sunshine and Twinkle do too. There was no need for me to change S and T over as they didn't select feed but I thought well three out of five pigs too so its best too. Flora and Fleur will eat the mix/pellets but not at the same speed as the boys they prefer hay and veggies. They are eating loads though and I give them a couple more veggies packed with vit c to help them along.
