Hello, not sure if this is in the right forum so sorry if it is!
Wondering if anyone could give a little advice on changing vets. I’m thinking of changing after Eddies complications at his last visit and have been recommended another vet who has successfully performed the surgery he needs also. I really like my current vets and don’t want to upset them but I need to do what is best for Eddie, and believe that changing is in his best interests. Is there any way to make changing less awkward? Do new vets reach out to the old vets to ask for medical records or would I need to get hold of them? TIA

I work as a receptionist at a veterinary office. We either email records to the client if they request them or if you sign a release we can send it directly to your new vet. You do what is best for your babies. If they ask, just be honest. I know it can feel awkward, but these guys are so fragile. Good care is hard to find for them.

Thank you so much for this!

I actually have 2 vets that I use for my guinea pigs, and am very honest about this with both of them (the vets, not the guinea pigs)
One is local, super nice, and will always fit me in for an appointment (usually in less than 30 mins), but she isn't a specialist.
The otehr is further away, offers a 24 hour service and is a specialist in guinea pigs and rabbits.
For the regular stuff I use my local vet.
For the more complicated issues I use the specialist.

I figure that this is like private health care, and since I am paying for it, I can choose who is the best person for my piggies to see!
Would it be possible to keep a good relationship with your current vet for routine things, or did you want to transfer fully to the new vet?
Either way it is your choice and i am sure your vet will understand.

Thank you for this. After speaking with the new vets, they have recommended that I stay with my current vets while all of this is going on. He had more blood in his urine today so think it’s probably best to just stick with my current ones for the time being. It’s such a difficult decision, I just feel like every decision I make is the wrong one. I’m having a phone consultation with my vet tomorrow to discuss everything so hopefully she can put my mind at ease:(
