Thanks to the piggy bank, Charlie is going to see a vet who can help him with his wheezing and croaking. Kenny is going too. Six months ago, Charlie was living in this outdoors with a pregnant sow. It was filled with water and he was very cold so it's possible he got a respiratory infection that wasn't treated. So hard to be without my boys for a week but Charlie needs this treatment.

Poor boy! Best of luck and fingers firmly crossed! Untreated URIs can sadly cause long term problems. Good that you can get specialist vet care for him - even if you miss yur boys like mad! :(

Hope all goes well for him, I know you'll miss them but hopefully Charlie will come back well and recovered. Lots of healing vibes to him and big hugs to you. Keep us updated on his progress x

It makes me so angry to hear how Charlie and the poor sow were living. I really hope your babies get well soon.

I hope he can be successfully treated & get back to full health soon

I hope so. He has had antibiotics, changes in bedding etc and his breathing has just got worse. He is gaining weight every week at a total of half a kilo over the last few months - meaning possible fluid retention. Even last night I brought home lettuce and he was eating for a bit, then he started croaking really fast and flopped out in the middle of the cage. He let Kenny finish off the food. Totally out of character for him, he's such a bossy pig.

that's so shocking! it breaks my heart to know that people like that acutally exist. good luck charlie and kenny at the vet hotel! make a speedy recovery x

Aww, it will be hard, but hopefully when they come home, Charlie will be well on the way to recovery. Wishing the boys a safe trip. :)

Todays the day. They're leaving at half 5. :(

Hi Kenzo, just to let you know your gorgeous boys have arrived safely. We've had lots of cuddles and the boys are now settled in their accommodation in my spare room and are tucking into supper as I type:) I have an appointment on Monday morning with my vet when both boys will get a thorough check up and hopefully we will get to the bottom of what is going on with poor Charlie. Many thanks to Pebble for her help transporting the boys today.

Both boys send wheeks to their Mum xx

Oh Wow!

Charlie and Kenny are gorgeous! x)

They're both so inquisitive - and are not shy about showing their luscious piggie lips...drool.......And Charlie is just so Flooooofy......drool.....and Kenny loves wheeking to Keane :(|)

Sending you a big hug Kenzo. x>>

I know how difficult it is to entrust you beloved boys to strangers such as me and EPGPR even if only for a week- and I want to re-assure you that this really is the best/right option for Charlie given his escalating symptoms, past history and the fact your own vets are clearly not cavy savvy.

They will be spoilt rotten at EPGPR.....and the vet is really on the ball.

Charlie can now receive proper diagnosis and treatment from an experienced cavy savvy vet - which means your own vet can then be asked to prescribe any required meds for him in future.

All the Pebble piggies are keeping their paws crossed that this can now be easily sorted so your boys will be back with you next week....and Charlie will be back to his bossy self - and enjoy many more active piggie years with his buddy Kenny.

x

Thank you for your messages, it made me laugh last night thinking about Kenny wheeking to music. He loves the radio, he falls asleep when I play music to him. I'm really happy they settled well. It's strange not having them, I went to make five breakfasts this morning but the girls were happy to finish off the extra veggies!

I sent an email back with Charlies medical history since I got him so I hope that helps. I forgot to add, the baytril dose he had was 0.4ml x 2 daily each time. I know this is the best thing for Charlie and I really want him to have as much time as possible with me and Kenny. Missing them both though, can't wait for them to be back next week xx

We send you all the hugs and kisses from us and all your friends at “Charlie Kenny Pigâ€

Remember to teach the other piggies some bad habits..;)

Lisa & Ali..xx

Just a very quick update as I'm supposed to be working!

The boys have been seen by the vet this morning, both have had a thorough MOT and I've let them in the very capable hands of N as she is going to try to carry out x-rays very shortly. I'm due back to the surgery at lunchtime when hopefully we will have a better idea of what is going on with the gorgeous Charlie. Will update later.

Wishing your boys all the best and hoping that Charlie can make a good recovery!

Apologies for the late update but with two vet visits today I've had to work late. I have already spoken to Kenzo this evening to update her, but for those following Charlie and Kenny's story here is the news so far.

Both boys were x-rayed today and both were found to have congested lung issues. Charlie had the classic 'hooting' of a heart pig and his x-ray revealed a slightly larger than normal heart and the surrounding area was not as clear as it should have been. Having watched the boys over the last 48 hours it has become apparent that Charlie is eating far more food than his little friend, and this has led to weight gain and increased heart symptoms. Kenny has shown slight signs of bloat and his poos are smaller than they should be so his diet has been tweaked slightly and he is being closely monitored.

On the recommendation of our vet we have divided the boys living quarters so they have their own space for the time being, this also means that I can monitor each pigs output and see exactly what they are eating. Charlie has been put on heart meds, a combination of Fortekor and Frusol solution and both are having extra Vit C and pro-biotics. N wants to see them both again on Friday to see what impact Charlie’s meds are having and also to see if Kenny’s chest is clearer and whether he has gained any weight.

I think we have just caught Charlie’s heart issues in time, without good veterinary care I doubt he would have been able to carry on much longer.

I'm really pleased to hear this and would like to thank CaviesGalore for agreeing to devote their time, effort and rescue space to giving Charlie and Kenny access to a cavy savvy vet and achieving the right meds/prognosis. Charlie clearly got seen in the nick of time - and I'm glad both CG and myself helped that to happen

Kenzo -HUGS!...... I know this has been a tough time for you - you have entrusted your boys to strangers......but the results are clearly worth it I promise you! It's amazing when you see what a cavy savvy vet can do...and Charlie didn;t even need to have any sedation/ GA!

Fingers crossed that on friday morning the vet will say they are ready to come back to you - so i will see you either friday evening or saturday.

Wow - this is a massive positive result!

Hugs
x

Oh I hope it's good news friday and they can come home. It's my day off and my birthday. I can't wait to see my boys again. Thank you for everything, it's great that they finally have a diagnosis and can start getting better xx

Great that you have finally got a diagnosis and can address the various issues.

At least now you have a diagnosis you can move forward and enjoy your time with the piggies more, must be a relief :)

Been cleaning out the boys cage this evening and getting it ready for them. They have new houses and tunnels and all sorts of treats - nettle roots, dandelion salad, herb hay etc to eat when they get back. I think I brought one of everything in the pet section at the garden centre. I'm sure I only went in there for cage cleaner. :))

So pleased you have something to go on. Bet you can't wait till they are home. A lovely birthday present.

Just a quick update. The boys are doing well, Charlie is being very good about taking his meds - despite their funny smell, which I think bothers me more than him! Kenny is currently eating me out of house and home bless him and has already gained a little weight :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes shopping for one item and comes home with a bag full - your boys are truly spoilt Kenzo! Off to do the morning meds round, will give the boys a little chin scratch from you K x

OK todays news. The boys had their follow up visit to see N this morning. She was very pleased with their progress, Kenny's chest is sounding beautifully clear, he has gained a little weight and generally seems very well in himself. Charlie had another thorough check over and N is delighted with the progress he has made so far. His meds seem to have kicked in now and he is no longer constantly lifting his head up to breath, nor is he 'hooting' every time he is picked up or moving around the cage. He is also much happier when being held, earlier in the week he was obviously uncomfortable around his tummy and got quite upset when we had to pick him up. N would like to see the boys again next Friday to re-assess Charlie's meds to make sure he is well on the road to recovery before sending him home. I know Kenzo was really looking forward to having her boys home today, but having spoken to her earlier, she understands that it is in the best interests of the C&K for them to stay with us for a little longer and I applaud her for putting the health of her piggies above her own wishes. It is never easy to entrust your beloved piggies into the care of a stranger, but she has been very brave in allowing the boys to come to stay whilst we try to get to the bottom of their health issues. Hopefully by this time next week the boys will have their medical plan in place and will be waiting for their taxi ride back to the South coast (thank you Pebble) :) I will try to get some pics up over the weekend, but in the meantime Charlie & Kenny send their mum wheeks and birthday wishes xx
