Hi everyone. I have a baby guinea pig name Beth. I plan on getting her another one as soon as a I have enough money. Most likely around sometime in February. However, she currently has a very large pet store cage. I don’t want to get another until I make sure I have the proper cage size. I wouldn’t want to cram two into a too small cage. So does anyone have any cheap cages they could recommend? I don’t have a lot money to spend on it, as I am currently saving up for the new Guinea pig as well.

Two sows together need a minimum cage size of 120cm x 60cm but 150cm x 60cm is best. A c&c cage is good as they are flexible and offer more space than standard commercial cages.
Of course having enough space is essential, but so is having a friend and as you mention that your piggy is a baby, then it really is so important that she isn't alone. The social needs of babies under four months old are so great.

When it comes to getting her a new friend, the best way is via dating at a rescue centre. They need to have character compatibility for them to have a successful bond and if you buy a piggy from a pet shop, then you have no idea whether they will have that and may not like each other. You would then need two cages as they would then have to live separately but as neighbours.

Please also ensure you have a good sized vet fund saved up. Guinea pigs are not cheap pets and vet fees can be very expensive as piggies are classed as exotic animals, plus I know vet fees in the US are more than here in the UK.

I looked around and searched many places for cages or C&C grids and then yesterday I went on Facebook and found someone selling 36 grids along with a manor of other stuff (hides, food dishes, water bottles, bedding, pee pads, play pen, tunnels, chews, hay racks etc...) and got a very good bargain for it all (unfortunately after having their guinea pigs for just over 2 years her husband became very allergic to them). So also look on selling sites for second hand stuff, some people keep things in great condition.
Tomorrow I need to get some coroplast or lino with a large piece of MDF that the cage will go on so I can make the cage and sell the shop bought cages.

Hi I made my cage for £17, it's very spacious and I only used correx and measured it to exactly the the size of the room so the correx would not move, be stable and protect the wall as well as being super easy to make! I just ordered 2 sheets of 4mm correx and it's so easy to clean! You could make the correx walls higher if you wanted to. I Just slotted 2 sheets together so it didn't matter if I went wrong with measuring so I could just overlap if needed. The second story is not attached to the cage, it's completely seperate so I can move it in and out when cleaning and is not necessary. It's pretty easy to make! Keep me updated on how you get on if you do make a cage/use C and C etc, or anything! Good luck! received_204450051345079.jpeg

I actually split the stuff up between my piggies, bunny and rat as there was soo much of it! Lol only thing is I have soo many ideas that 36 grids isn't enough 😱 I might need to rein in my ideas.... (some of them are for my bunny as well tho!)

I would love to have a room to dedicate to my piggies....might have to kick my son out now he's 18 and going to start an apprenticeship next week....😂 joking 😂

Haha thank you the butterfly polar fleeces are £2.99 each from the onlinehomeshop! and originally I brought just 36 too! Then I ended up buying more! (For the bonding pen and to add an extra story or two) and then I realized I didn't actually need the grids I could just make it from correx to make it look less cagey. I don't regret it as I had planned to make 3 stories in total but only 2/5 of the guinea pigs actually use the second story occasionally so doubt they would all use the third story! Plus I'd need like double the fleeces and more cleaning! And haha bless him good luck with his apprenticeship! I'd like to have a baby when I'm 30 (in 5 years time) but I don't know where I'd put it as I couldn't bring myself to move the guinea pigs outside! Might have to put the baby in the hutch instead 😂
