Hello everyone..

Mine are currently eating a lot of kale, carrot, sweetcorn cobs and parsley..

Although I spend a lot of time in the supermarket in the fruit and veggies department making sure I vary what they are getting and generally spoiling them rotten, the one thing that gets them both excited, one of um to the point of popcorning at the sight of it is grass cut from the garden.. If theres a cage full of nice fresh veggies and some grass its always the grass that they go for!

They are cheap dates! ;D

yeah mine are exactly the same i don't know why i bother! lol

Yep my lot take the grass every time! Ralfie rumbles at it, well it could be a purr actually lol! Is it really better for them than veg Karen? x

Yep, Timothy and Orchard have the best Calcium to Phosphorus rate (much better than Rye), the whole action of eating grass (and hay) is beneficial to their teeth (unlike veg which is a different eating action), its high in fibre and provides something for them to tunnel in which is a natural behavioural instinct (meeting the Animal Welfare Bill no less!). Veg has the wrong Ca:PH ratio, particularly the fruits and roots- whilst they need the vits and minerals these can be found in wild herbage too- problem is finding wild herbage (unless you grow your own :) )

I would say Orchard and Tim grass can be fed ad lib with hay and herbage can be fed with caution to make up a complete diet :)

Wow thanks for that, not sure what grass i actually have in my garden! What about leafy veg like spinach or Kale? Is that the same chewing action as grass or is it more like carrot etc? Sorry if thats a stupid question, mine will take anything leafy over other veg too :)

Only grass and hay have the side to side action needed to wear down molars properly.

You probably have a type of Rye in your garden, Orchard grass would be very undesirable :) and Tim grows too long :) But its great for recreating a natural environment for them to make tunnels in and hide, not forgetting the all important eating ;D

I'm the saddo that goes Wow! A field of Tim grass! Fortunately people aren't suprised by much I do and say now if it relates to guineas. When I say I wish I'd brought a bag to pick some grass someone always pipes up- 'you can use this...' ::)

Even my son knows his grasses quite well now ;D

;D ;D ;D I'm planning on making a run for them in the summer so i might get some Tim for them see how well i can do with it, my next door neighbour is a gardener so might ask him how i'd be best doing it! Thanks for the tips :)

Plant Tim with Orchard grass and maybe some Cereal grasses in the corner and alfalfa. I have a herbage mix too designed with guineas in mind or you can buy straight seeds.
Planet Guinea I have an updated shop to go online this wheekend if you bear with me! I wouldn't plant outside at the moment anyway :)

Ooo thanks i will have a look, I'm in no rush, the shed isnt even up yet never mind the run ;D x
