How often should we take our piggies to the vets for health checks? Any advice would be appreciated.

i only take mine for teeth checks - several piggies years ago died from overgrown teeth and they didnt have any symptoms until the day before. I wont risk it now.

I do all their own claws and that though. I would only do once a year. It only cost me £9 for two, so hardly a bank breaker.

Thank you. We have one piggie ill at the moment and one of the things that is wrong with him is dental disease so am now naturally worried about our other piggies and would like to try and prevent any illness or problems with their teeth now.

oops i pressed the wrong button - i meant to quote!

Take your piggies to vets for teeth check up if unsure, theres no harm in doing so, and will put your mind at ease - how old are they?

The one who is poorly at the moment is just over 3 and we have his brother who is the same age too. We've got 2 girls one of about 9 months old and one approximately 3 months old.

I thought it would be for these best to take them, especially the older one, especially if it puts my mind at rest.

I would take the three year old in - have they had their teeth trim if they are ill already? try and avoid using the anthistetic (oops cant spell tonight!) , it can be done without it - if they are ill already they may be a little weaker so best to try and keep off it. the young ones will not have any problems with their teeth - they are too young ! hope that helps.

How ill is your little piggy?

The one that is ill has been at the vets for the past 10 days. He is quite ill really but is holding his own. We were referred to a specialist today and he is now staying there having more treatment. The specialist has now determined whats wrong with him and hopefully will be able to make him better, including the problem with his teeth.
I'll get the other older one booked in for a check up.
Thank you for your advice.

aw good - thats good to hear hes being well looked after. Yeah get the other one in for a checkup. You can take the others, but they are too young to have problems TBH with you.

Hope it goes ok x

How do you know that the vet. knows what to look for? Does the vet. even know what the normal heart and respiratory rate and body temperature is in a normal, healthy guinea pig?

I am a member of the CCT, where they can have free worming there every three months, with which you get a full health check and dental check. I wouldn't advise taking them much more frequently than this, if you did take them for health checks at all.
