i really struggle checking chesneys bits! :red he doesn't apprecaite being turned on his back... and he struggles like mad! mallethead

i manage to get like a second to have a quick look... and sometimes he has had a piece of hay sticking out which i try and carefully remove... but he hates it! :(

i know i need to be checking more thoroughly. but how? :red

Have to honest i struggle checking the little boys too :red
the girls don't seem to mind being turned over for me to have a look but the boy... sooo sqirmy

i know! maisie is so well behaved and just lets me check her over. no problems at all! ches squirms so much... he didn't for the vet though so i know he can behave when he wants! rolleyes

are you supposed to er.... how can i say it... make it pop out kind of? to check all the way down? :red

and how do you check the bum bum? :red

Ideally you do want to fully extrude the penis, all sorts of debris can turn up on it and you want to make sure there's no hair or hay wound around it.

Checking the anus is simple enough, no need to prod anything with that :)). Just gently part it, you'll soon see (or smell) if there's any impaction trouble there.

I used to have a photo of how I held the boars for checking, will have to see if I can find it.

You will find that most pigs object initially, to a greater or lesser degree. With practice most of them quickly adjust and do not complain, try checking them daily for a couple weeks!

well trying to check him was .... interesting! :)) he struggled quite a bit but i think with practice he will be ok! he was much better having his nails trimmed anyway. :)

I wrap my Mimsi in a towel (upper half) when checking his bits. I have to check him daily as he has problems with his back end. Ive found all sorts in him including a small piece of carrot, hay & megazorb. He is generally very good and just lets me get on with it. Practise makes perfect and I'm sure you will soon perfect the skill of 'bottom inspection'....

i tried the towel wrapping! he escaped! :)) think i need to practice that one! :))

I'm doing it daily much to Fred's disgust I wrap the top half in a towel his head and front paws and leave his bum unwrap... check QUICK...

Ok, are you kidding me I have to check the girls too?! ?/

ches looks disgusted aswell when i check him. :))

i do a daily check and check maisies underneath aswell just to make sure there are no problems etc. she is so good. just lets me have a quick look and doesn't bother at all. :)

ches did better today... but i can't get his bits to erm... pop out...! :{ i read you kind of press either side and it should be there! but nothing happened! :{

i looked on this site 'barmy4boars' and it showed a 'cauliflower willy' and chesneys looks like that but not as obvious. it has that cauliflower shape but it is just on the outside, not showing through alot.

he is getting used to me checking though. so he is doing well. :)

I have to check Rhino Robin everyday (slowly but surely wheening myself onto Rhino...it suits him so much more :))), but I don't turn him onto his back to do it. I kneel down with him on my thighs and just lean over him and effectively lift his back end up gently (not so that he's in a backbreaking position) and part things to get in and see what there is.
I generally always have to clean him out with a tissue (so ming it makes me gag) and he's pretty good with me, until enough is enough and he starts to squirm and squeak at me.

Hamish doesn't appreciate my checks at all! Luckily he's a pretty clean boy, so not too much more than a check with him :)

I'd say it's more of you getting used to the smell than anything! If the piggeh is awkward though, then I suppose you might wanna follow better techniques than mine rolleyes

you know what aswell... he was so good for the vet checking! lay back in her arms, cradled like a baby and purred away! :))

he doesn't seem smelly or anything really. i know i haven't been able to check properly.

sometimes he has tiny strands of hay and white strands (:{) on his bits and i gently pull them out. but other than that, his bits seem clean and not smelly.

maybe the smell is deep inside! :)>>>

Yeh the smell isn't evident till you 'open' his bits up, and then it hits you like..a smog >.<

At least that's how it is with Robin. NOT very pleasant at all *shakes head*

i'm heaving already! :)>>> oh well, got to be done!

what do you clean it with? just a tissue?

Haha, trust me, they don't smell, till you open up their bums - as far as I'm aware there is no such thing as a completely non-smelly pig when it comes to bottoms! But correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Yeh I just use a tissue - that way it can be flushed down the loo as quickly as possible!

great... can't wait! rolleyes

do you have to press quite firmly to get it out? :red

Nah, I find it a bit awkward to get out as it's a bit sticky and clumps together, it's hard to explain...
You just have to experience it to know I spect :))

ok, that sounds er... great! :)) hopefully he will get better and less squirmy each day and then i will beable to check properly.

feel really bad i haven't ever checked though. i always look and gently pull any loose bits of hay etc out... but i never fully got it out! :))

Don't worry about it, I'm sure if there were any real problems you'd know about it. I started off just taking bits of hay that were sticking out but then I gently parted the area and saw some of the megazorb and eventually delved deeper until I came across the smell and...goop.
I panicked and questioned here whether or not he was impacted but was reassured. So seriously, I think everything is a learning process! Don't worry about it too much ;)

ok, well i will keep checking how i am doing and gradually he will probably get used to it and i can check better each time.

hope he is one of the ones that doesn't smell! :))

hmm... not having much luck checking chesney's bits... he is getting better with not wriggling but i can't get it out so to speak! i imagine it is all sticky inside? is there a way to loosen it? :red

It's in the sack area where his anus is so to speak, not his willy ;)
That's the bit that pongs - not his willy.

I just kinda open it as gently as I can with two fingers and get a tissue to try and rub/pull out the bits I can find.

I don't know if all pigs get it so you might not have a problem at all - so don't get too wound up by it if you don't find anything. If there is something there, you will find it! I found it by looking, but with Hamish I can safely say I can't see anything. It might just be cause Robin's much older than Hamish.

So seriously love, don't worry too much!

yay.... finally... i can check chesneys bits without him struggling! it has taken me since december to build up his confidence in letting me, and it was the first time today he just lay in my arms, cradled like a baby and let me check and he is actually really clean. he did have a stand of hay with white stringy stuff on the end of it. i gently pulled that out and he was fine.

proud of him. and then he gets a little piece of veg as a reward, and then we have long cuddles. he likes to snuggle against my boob :red and his bum is actually probably bigger than it! :red:))
