My Guinea Pig ate about 3in of a cherry tomato plant stem and leafs. We didn't know that they were poisonous until today. Sadly we have also been feeding them the small green part off the cherry tomatoes for DAYS! I just want my Babies to be ok. We can't find a vet in our area that takes Guinea Pigs (We live in Kuna, a small town near Boise.) We haven't noticed any changes in their behaviour, yet at least. Is there ANYTHING at home we can do to help them.

You need to take them to a vet immediately! They can die if they eat them! Try to find a vet near you- quickly! You might have to take them today, it depends on how much they ate. I’m going to try finding you a vet near you.

We do live in Kuna, Idaho. Do they take Guinea Pigs? MY mom contacted a few vets out here and they said they didn't do guinea pigs.

JUNK! I spoke with my mom and she reminded me that our van broke down 2 days ago and isn't running at all and she can't get it fixed until next week. We have no way to get them to a vet. :.(

Oh no! I’m going to try to find one that takes in Guinea pigs. I’m also going to find one that can come to your house

Is there anything AT ALL we can do at home?!?!

At this point we have all been praying and put it in God's hands in hopes of a miracle.

I’ve found a vet that takes in Guinea Pigs: The Pet Doctor. You might wanna call them to ask if they can come to your house. Also if you have another vehicle they are in Boise.

Thank you ... you can never have too many prayers!

Sadly, we have no other vehicle ... and my mom was in the hospital yesterday. She needs to be in bed from a blood clot.

YOu have been most helpful. I cannot thank you enough.

Your welcome, you are right you can’t have too many prayers! I hope your mom feels better! You can ask your dad to call the vet I recommended and see if they can come to your house.

So It's been 5 days since Silvester ate the tomato. turns out it was more like 6in. Either way he seems ok. I think were safe, still, thanks for your help.

Awww your welcome! I haven't been on the forum because I started school. Now I am sick and I don't feel good. You can come to me whenever you need help!

I had to rush a piggy to the vet earlier this year, after he ate a couple of lily leaves when he had been free ranging. I phoned the vet and they are very poisonous to cats (but there's no research on piggies - surprise, surprise) so I took him in. After an overnight visit where they monitored him and gave him extra fluids to prevent damage to his kidneys he came home. There was no indication that he had been at all ill.

The vet said that, in all likelihood, he was not affected and mentioned some research that shows that rabbits are not affected even by eating deadly nightshade (same family as tomatoes) and it is probably the same story for guinea pigs. So, long story short, piggies are resilient creatures that seem to be able to get away with eating some nasty things. However, there have been stories on here where pigs have been poisoned by garden plants, so you can't be too careful.
