I've only had Chester a week but I already love him to bits. I went out earlier to the shed and found him hunched up and facing the wall..totally unlike my outgoing and randy little man! I brought him inside immediately and checked him over. His eyes were sunken and closed and he had discharge (brown) from his mouth. He has also lost SO much weight - he is 9 weeks old and weighs 350g :(
I rushed him to the vet who is baffled..he believes there is definately infection so he has had a Baytril injection. He had a good look at the teeth and said they 'feel a bit irregular but are only just coming through properly'. He also said he is puffing away for breath. I am to phone tomorrow and if Chester is still here in the morning he will start him on oral Baytril. He has had 4mls of baby food and 3mls of Bio-Lapis. He has picked up a little bit and his eyes are open and look more normal, and while I was syringing him he heard a bag rustling in the next room and started rooting around for food. I have given him some slices of cucumber which he at least nibbled, and a grape to try and tempt him.
I am worried sick. He is staying inside tonight, he is lying on a warm fleece blanket. Please can you all say a prayer and keep your fingers crossed for my little man :( Thanks x

Poor Chester could he have got a chill?Hope he soon gets better.

Oh no, I had only just been looking at the pics of him - what a shock for you! I do hope he's on the mend - I wonder what's wrong?

Please keep me updated hun x

Keeping my fingers crossed for Chester, I hope he recovers quickly. Hugs to you too Tracy. xx

Thanks for all of the messages guys.
Chester is still here. He is nibbling cucumber and grape when I hold it to his mouth and he's making a clicking noise with his teeth? My boyfriend seems to think he wants the food but can't eat it. I have tried him with more of the Bio-Lapis and baby food, then had the idea of mashing a banana and syringing that which he seemed to enjoy. Better still he has started passing poos - only small, tiny ones and they're very dry - but at least it's something..
I am still baffled and don't know what to think :(

Chester is still here this morning! :)pxoxo-c;)x)

The vet said this would be a good sign so I am very pleased. I put the leftover Bio-Lapis in his drinking bottle and it looks like he's had around 10mls of it overnight. I've just syringed 3mls of baby food too, and he's nibbling veg and fruit but not getting anywhere with it. The vet is starting him on Baytril orally today, but I am baffled. Does this sound like a tooth problem or something else? To recap his symptoms are/were:
Rapid weight loss
Crusty eyes
Discharge from the mouth
Loss of apetite/not drinking
Floppy/lifeless

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on my poor Chessie Bear's illness? Thanks!

Glad to hear Chester is still here Tracy - I hope someone can give you an answer. Healing vibes for little Chester xx

Oh poor Chester, I can't really offer any advice, but sending a huge hug for him, and hope he continues to make little bits of progress. xxxxx

It could be any number of things, infection; bacterial or fungal, parasites. poisoning.
You can keep adding to the list!

I am reading through GuineaLynx and it says that discharge from the eyes/mouth might indicate an abscess?

It may indicate a URI, hay-fever, trauma to the airway caused by a foreign body.

I honestly think it might be a URI despite the fact his nose is clear. He was really chugging for breath last night and then improved after his Baytril injection. The vet also gave him an injection of something beginning with 'Dex', possibly a steroid?

Way to go Chester and Tracy.

Keeping major positive vibes coming your way.

hope the little fellow gets much better soon - could it be that he's just not used to living outdoors, even though he's in the shed and maybe the cold has just hit him making him ill? I probably sound stupid!

Sorry, just catching up with things and sending poor Chester my vibes.

I hope that you get to the bottom of his problems soon!

Chester has now developed yellow diahorrhea.

What do I do now? In most cases I'd hold off the food and only give hay, but he won't touch his hay. Do I continue with syringe feeds, or just give Bio-Lapis? I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and so so worried 8...:(

Give Vedra a call. Any drugs should only be given to a pig under six months old if it is life/death emergency.
You must keep giving him fluid, preferably rehydration fluid.
His gut may be reacting to the antibiotic. See pm.
