My boars are having a disagreement this evening. For a while i was very worried i was going to have to seperate them. Theres been lots of teeth chattering and there was the odd scuffle. But they seem to have calmed a little more now. Just whinging at each other a bit and Polo is trying to mount little Merlin, which he wont let him at the moment. Theyre not getting on fab right now, but I'm monitoring it at the moment.

Anyaway, earlier, while Merlin was hiding on the ledge on top of his house he would not stop chirping. I got a few good videos of it. I was amazed to hear him doing it. Anyone else seen a piggie do this? Ive read what it could mean but i just wondered what peoples thoughts are on this?

Heres the video, click on it to view:

Oooh it's so strange to see them chirping! I've never had it before and my piggies did not enjoy that video! :... They all shot across the cage and rumbled! Oooopsie, had to stop it! I've never seen a video so clear of it - thanks for sharing!

One of mine did it once, we thought it was a bird! Mine just all sat bolt upright just now when I played it!

Lovely clear video, well done! I think it's when they are slightly upset/distressed & it is an alarm call to the others maybe?

wow, never heard chirping i have the koo noise on video! X

Max just curled up even more into his hay when I played that, defintely seems like a warning to others pigs judging by responses in this thread.

wow i always wonderered what this chirping was, i have yet to hear mine do that, but i am sure i wont mistake the noise when they do (if they do)
quite amazing :)):))

That is such a good video!

My lot didnt seem to like it, the came out to have a listen, then took for cover :...

Mine neither, the herd were upstairs eating and are now all hiding and since I started the video Buddy hasn't moved a muscle, still stood by his food bowl just looking at me

Blimey he's got a pair of lungs on him!
Mine did not respond well to that, some ran for cover, some starting burring and two completely froze!

Yeah all three bolted into pigloo "burrring" as they went. Piggies no liking the chirping. Is he a dominant pig...maybe its a piggie call as heard leader to return home or hide

I find it interesting that this is a noise that people know little about although the general consensus is that it's some kind of alarm call. I wonder what noises the wild relatives of the domestic guinea pig make. If you listen to the alarm call of a ground squirrel or grey squirrel they are comparably similar.

On a side note he's a handsome pig. :))

that is really weird cause looking at your pig chirping almost looked like he was in some kind of trance. It definitely looks like a fear thing i found it quite disturbing to watch, it was like he was having some kind of a seizure and had completely zoned out.
I dont know what all you other members think

lol you arent kidding its loud, my Oscar went running down the ramp when i started playing it, now he is just stood motionless! what a lovely vid, doesnt his mouth open quite wide to do it?

arrrrrrr x)

What an amazing sound. I'd love to really know what it means. We've had a couple of people on here report it and say that their piggies stood there as if in a trance, rather than be scared by it... and some have said that their chirpers are more... lyrical (for want of a better word) with it... who knows?

Wow, fantastic video.

That's such a strange sound I never heard that before and such a clear video

Wow what a great video, thats a keeper.. I didnt expect the loudness :(|) lol.

reminds me of my chipmunks, they make the exact same sound when they are distressed, but a little slower.

Hes certainly not the dominant one of the pair at all. Polo will tell him off. Its interesting to hear what other peoples piggies did when you played this. Thank you for sharing your experiences. He didnt open his mouth wide at all during chirping much. Just looked like he was whistling. I was luck to have my camera at hand when he did it, as ive had it close by for when the babies arrived. I guess it may well be something piggies wild cousins do in the wild to warn of preditors. Merlin's not done it since, i think he was upset, he'd be bickering with Polo that evening, so maybe it is a sad sound?

It's an amazing sound. I've heard Ludwig do it once a few months after getting him. Maybe one or two estimated. He didn't seem scared when he did it and it wasn't quite as much of an alarm as your little guys seemed to be. Ludwigs was more like a bird singing when he did it.

quite odd. Hmm. To me it sounds like an alarm call for the herd to duck and cover from a predator or something. But why would they be doing that in a cage in a house. Very odd indeed

Mine just did exactly the same lol. Ran and hid! rolleyes Archie won't come out of his box now! :))

That shows it beautifully! It is very unusual, I'm "lucky" to have a chirper as well but it's woken me every night for the last 4 nights as Daisy is SO loud. mallethead

Wow my rabbit and guinea pigs all leapt up and looked very unhappy. It cannot mean something nice by the way they reacted. :( It really sounds like a bird. I wish I could know what it means. It is amazing you got it on video. It is so rare.

my two girlies definitely voted with their feet and couldn't bolt fast enough for cover! I was not prepared for how loud it would be and it terrified them. Still no sign and even with a veggie treat they are not coming out. :...

Wow! Never heard any of mine do this either! :-) you should post this on YouTube - I don't think there's another one as clear as this! :-)

wow that is so strange! ours have never made a noise like that! but when we went to a zoo once, we were watching the meerkats, and a large bird flew over, and the watch out one made a noise very similar to this before bolting for cover .
