Last night one of my guinea pigs started making a sound just like a bird like a chirping sound.

it was super cute but why do they do this i have never heard the sound from a guinea pig before.

Hey,

I'm a new guinea pig owner but I have read about this. It's a sort of unknown phenomenen (no idea how you spell that, lol). Peter Gurney talks about it.

Some theories say it is because the guinea is frightened, but Peter Gurney and others have argued against this as could see no reason as to why. Also the response of other piggies who appear to stop and stare at the one chirping seems to denote that it's something more special than that.

Basically we'll probably never find out why, but feel very lucky that you got to experience this very rare phenomenen!

I have heard that its called singing and is very rare - supposed to be when a piggy is really happy or something - but when I have read about it they say you should be very priviliged (sorry cant spell )

One of my piggies ( i think Toffee) does this on the odd occasion, she was doing it the other morning about 5am, my OH had never heard it before and had never believed me when i'd told him about it before, he does now LOL.

She only does it when its dark which i find odd, tends to be early hours, it is the sweetest little thing though.

I believe there are two kinds of chirping which have such subtle differences it's hard to tell the difference to our human ears. One for a happy pig and one when they're unhappy.
I have only experienced the unhappy sound. First from George in the dark at night time. The next morning his brother Gerry had attacked him and bitten him so I can only assume he was either scared or unhappy. They obviously don't live together anymore!
The other time with the same situation with another pair of boars.
Flinstones posted two video clips of two of her pigs. One sounds slightly different and the piggies situations were different which is what makes me think there can be a happy version of chirpping aswell.
I do think it's one of those things we'll never really know until someone learns to squeak Guinea Pig!

I've heard chirping a few times over the years. It always occurred at night, and it never sounded scared to me. It is an incredible thing to hear :)

One of my piggies is a chirper ,not often and usually in the early evening. She does not seem scared or unhappy,it is just as though she has to tell the world about something and that is the best way she can do it..
The other piggies stop to listen but soon resume normal behavior(sp)
