So I got my two boars about 3 days ago, and just today both have developed sneezing habits. One sneezes a lot less than the other. Nose and eye crusties are only developing for one of the pigs (the one sneezing more).

There's very little exotics vets in my area, and I have just been told to give my piggies chloropalm by the "vet" that had worked in the pet store

Now please hold off the bias for one second, ignore the fact that the vet had come from the pet store, and give me your two cents = is chloropalm good for my piggies?

Keep in mind they're 6-8 weeks old, I would like Bactrim if it was available... my choices are pretty limited.

I've head many bad testimonies about chloropalm, anyone have any good ones?
 
assume you're in the US. I've never heard of Chloropalm, but I have heard of Bactrim. Isn't that similar/the same to Baytril? If so I would go for Bactrim. Over here they prescribe Baytril for URI. You need to treat the guineas quickly as they can go very quickly downhill if not treated.

a lot of things got cleared up, I did some more research, and went to visit a vet too.

Chloropalm is a pretty strong drug with some or more side effects than baytril.

I asked if my vet if he had any Bactrim, he says he's never heard of it, but he does have Baytril. I got a 10 day treatment course on it.

I'm not sure at this point if the sneezing has lessened or not, it's only been 1 day after all... I'm giving him 0.15ml/cc treatment, twice daily.

They seem o.k besides sneezing. Nose discharge and eye discharge has considerably lessened. They're still eating lots and popcorning in the mornings, pretty active little for pigs that are sick.
 
Good you have treatment for them, are both on baytril?

Did you buy them from a petshop? If so, claim back your vets fees asap, as I think in the States you only have 15 days to do so from the time you bought the sick animal.
 
Pigs are good at hiding illness :) Assume both are on Baytril? I didn't realise you could get Baytril in the US (or I thought it was called something else!) so that's good.
 
yes both are on baytril, the vet weighed the pigs before prescribing them, so the dosage should be good... is everything looking good here?

I bought them from a pet shop but i live in Vancouver, Canada. Does that apply around here? lol

btw, to anyone that has ever used Baytril, around how long should it normally take to stop the sneezing? my vet claims that my pig's lungs are still okay with normal breathing patterns. Just nasal discharge from both pigs (which has considerably lessened after baytril)... I'm thinking its a developing URI
 
As with any infection really, if dosage and ab correct, it should start to improve in 3-4 days tops!

I do not know the laws in Canada but it is worth persuing. These piggies were sick when you bought them, so they shop are liable for the vets fees. Dont let them fob you off! Here, it has happened with several members with a large pet store called pets @ home and eventually they were reimbursed.
 
sorry assumed you were in US as you said cents ::) I think you should still be able to claim though and get money back for what you spent at the vets
 
Its been 4 doses of Baytril so far, I'm definetly seeing a decrease in appetite and water drinking

Now would be appropriate for me to get back to the topic at hand = Anyone have experience with Chloropalm? Maybe thats just a different name for something else? Because my vet didn't call Baytril Baytril, he called it some other long name.

Sneezing hasn't improved much either, if it has, not all of it has been healed.

I'm giving Baytril one more day,if things dont improve, I'm requesting a change in medication... but the only other viable option is Chloropalm.
 
I looked up Chloropalm on the forums on http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/ and it seems it's a chloramphenicol derivative. One of the members (I think) there is a vet tech in BC so I would really recommend signing up and posting there for advice on that specific antibiotic.

With Baytril you really need to use a probiotic an hour or so after administering as it can really knock out the gut flora. Not sure what's available to you in Canada so again I'd recommend posting for advice on Guinea Lynx.

If your vet doesn't know the name Bactrim let them know that the antibiotic is trimethoprim sulfa or co-trimoxazole. Brand names are Bactrim and Septrin.
 
Why is the usage of a probiotic important? I've been using Baytril for two days now without any idea that this was needed.

My vet has once again failed me.

probiotic is normally used along side anti biotics as the pigs could get an upset stomach otherwise :)

in october 2007 our zoe took ill she was given terramycin antibiotic injections, then surgery to remove her reproductive organs as her ovaries were cystic and she had a 20gram mass growing on the outside of her uterus. by the way i am in australia and vets and guinea pigs DON'T get on :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: NOT once was a probiotic mentioned and i had NEVER heard of it. ever sice about november 2007 zoe has had soft poops due to the antibiotics and hormones everywhere after the surgery. guinea pigs can't vomit and they have delicate tummies. antibiotics kill bad bacteria but they also kill good bacteria causing the piggy an upset tummy. a probiotic protects the piggy tummy and adds good bacteria and have read here should be given via syringe a few hours after antibiotics and couple of times during the day. now zoe is on protexin again a probiotic but it is having no affect on her and i am at my wits end! antibiotics can sometimes affect appertites(sp) so grind some pellets in grinder or food processor mix in pre boiled water, add 1-2 teaspoons of baby food puree like sweetcorn and mix into a paste that will go through a syringe or feed of a plastic sppon to your piggies to help their tummies too. feed 2-5 times a day, and some preboiled water is also good via a syringe. O0 hoping this helps you and good luck with your boys.
