Christian was at emergency vet appointment this morning!

Poor Christian.
My vet gave Phoebe a higher dose of Loxicom after her spay as she said they find the higher dose is more effective. It certainly worked for her - recovery was much less stressful than Jemimah’s.

Go for it if your vet is happy.
Keeping Christian pain free is much better for his happiness and quality of life
 
Here’s hoping Christian’s weight improves on the higher dose. He’s lucky that you are so vigilant @Betsy
 
Update:-

Well today Christian's weight topped the scales at 1006g :yahoo:. I am going to keep him on this dose until I come back from holiday as I can't monitor his weight and I have already written the "Idiot's Guide" for my piggy sitters. Then if it's the same when I get back I'll slowly decrease it by 0.5ml every 2 weeks. I had a quick word with the vet when I was in with Velvet this morning for her final check up (bad eye, URI and bladder sludge - all cleared up now) and she (the vet) is happy with this course of action.
 
UPDATE TIME:
Christian has stayed a similar weight at around 1000g for around 4-5 weeks now:yahoo:. He has been on 0.7ml Metacam twice a day. I am slowly reducing it by 0.05ml every two weeks. Last time I reduced it every week but when he got down to 0.55ml he started to lose a significant amount of weight so on the advice of a vet I increased it back up to 0.7ml. I think that changing his dose once a week was probably too soon for him (I did it on advice from the vet). From today his is on 0.6ml twice a day for 2 weeks then back to 0.55ml. Hopefully this time he will be OK on it. The vet said that he may need a maintenance dose for the rest of his life. She was hoping for around 0.4ml twice a day but we will see how he gets on. I suggested to the vet that I would reduce the dose every 2 weeks rather than every week and see how we get on this time and she agreed that it was probably the best idea as I know Christian well. He has also had longer for whatever he did to his back to settle down. If it wasn't for the Metacam you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with him now. :)

So do I Heather. If he has to be on a maintenance dose then so be it. The vet did warn me that it may shorten his life. I don't see how cos if he doesn't have enough Metacam he is in pain so he doesn't eat and that will shorten his life anyway.
 
All the best for a gradual reduction; but great that Christian has stabilised again!
