Now that I have had a word with Niki, I feel that it is time to introduce the 2 latest and for the moment permanent and final members of the CavyKind clan. My beautiful and adorable boys, Ruben and Rye.
It was not my original intention to keep them, though I think that I knew from the moment I saw them they were going to be special :)

So this will be these stunning boys first, of hopefully many Christmases with us. What more could I ask for?

Here they are looking a little stunned at being taken outside for a pic. They were only out minutes, but it had to be done as our camera is iffy indoors!

Rye on the left and obviously Ruben on the right!

Thank you, they are rather gorgeous :)

You know I think part of me felt "bad" about saying I was going to keep them (even to myself) as they would have been so easy to re-home. They were in fabulous condition when they arrived and have come on in leaps and bounds as far as feeling more confident at being handled.
Generally I keep the oldies, ones with impactions/teeth problems/chronic health issues and the feral types ::)

I am very lucky to have these 2 litle imps to complement the existing pigs :)

awww why on earth feel bad about keeping them, I'd feel quite smug to be honest, no pig that comes to me ever leaves, I can not and will never do that, I dont know how you rescues manage to overcome that feeling I guess I'm selfish thinking I know they will be loved and worshiped here, out there I dont know what will happen to them, I'd be a wreck worrying about them, ::)

So glad the boys have found a forever home.

Sadly the same can't be said for the rest of their family - their sister Twiggy is being fostered by Beks for me and I still have their nephews Freddie, Frankie and Peep Peep all waiting for their own families. Reuben and Rye look very like Peep Peep and the other boys - such lovely pink noses!

The thing is Michelle as anyone involved with active animal rescue will tell you...you can't keep them all. And it's very true.
17 years ago or so when I became involved in general dog/cat/bunny/Guinea etc etc rescue..

Someone who had been doing it for years once said "Remember Barbara, the more you keep, the less you will be able to help." And you know what, they were right. I'll always remember and value what they said, it's worth listening to people who are more experienced than you are, that is something I learnt ;)

I have seen enough animal collectors in my time...and I'm generalising here... to know that I don't want to become one. So keeping a guinea pig for no other reason than I love and care about there welfare is very unusual here. I care about them all, but recognise that if I want to maintain the level of care the existing animals (and hubby!) enjoys....I cannot keep them all.
That would ultimately be very selfish of me...
And no, I don't feel smug, just thrilled to bits :D

Sorry to hear this, do you have any pictures of them , I'd really love to see them :)
How old are they?

Are they on guinea Pig rehome? Or on your site, if so I'll take a peek!

Barbara

Freddie and Frankie and Twiggy and Biba are all on Guinea Rehome - if you search for West Midlands they should pop up.

Peep Peep isn't on there as he has had problems with his eyes - I'd love to keep him but we will have to see...

Oh, I think I may have seen them, but not realised they were related!
Will have a look :)
Thank you.

Barbara so glad you are thrilled i would be too, but i also know ME and know I could not part with any pig I am being totally honest but i worry about the ones I have now, not in the future , I guess living here where pigs are hard to come by, no rescues exist I have my name with the vets and pet shops etc but if I did or have already rescue any they stay, I'm not an animal collector but much prefer the company of animals to people and am quite happy to surround myself with them, I am even thinking of moving to get more land to have more animals, I'm going to end up an eccentric old lady surrounded by animals and i cant think of anything more perfect, we have donkey rescues bat rescues and bird rescues etc here on the island the donkey one started with a few donkeys now they have hundreds some are adopted and the rest live out their lives what they have left of it peacefully, maybe thats me with piggys instead,
I could never be a rescue that does it on a big scale so the amount i get come to me is so low that I can afford to keep them, again just goes to show how differently we see and do things, I would never expect every one to do as i do but I am quite happy with what I do and equally at ease with what other rescues do, either way pigs get loved and wanted

Aww Kate this is sad that they haven't found their forever home yet - they're all lovely. Peep Peep was a mini Ruben, Freddie & Frankie looked more like Twiggy, it wouldn't surprise me if Ruben or Rye was their dad ::)

Barbara they are looking fantastic! Such big handsome boys & you shouldn't feel bad, i'm chuffed to mint balls they're staying with you as they sure are, they now have the love & attention they so deserved ;D
Niki :)

Look at all that hair, my goodness they have changed so much since I first met them! :)

Here is their sister Twiggy with her cage mate Biba, they are lovely girls!

Twiggy is very pretty (as is Biba) identical colouring as my boys but what a difference in the coat types!
Rye is short/rough haired at the front, long at the back. While Ruben is almost Peruvian like, just more of a little haystack ::)

It'd odd isn't it how sibling piggies can be so alike...but different!

Barbara

when purdey gave birth to 5 (she came to me very very pregnant) all of the babeis were so different 2 had long coats 2 had ridge backs 2 were all one colour etc

Gosh they look gorgeous boys :)

Do you have any pictures of the himi sow that came from Niki, I transported her to Niki, and I'd love to see her settled with her friends.

I have been explaining to Niki our camera is a bit iffy, that is why the boys were taken outside (much to their disgust) for their pic.
Will hopefully have some Millie pics very soon though. She is doing really well and madly in love with Parsley! Who is an obviously, neutered boar of mine who needed a companion :)

She loves living indoors and is a lot more setttled though still nervous, but maybe she will reamain a little shy? As long as she is happy, I am :)

That's lovely to hear she's settled with a boarfriend :) My two girls came from Donna and aren't nervous at all as she handles them a lot so it's possible Millie's character. As you say as long as she's happy.

Do you find a neutered boar and sow are better together than two sows or two boars? I'm trying to decide whether to neuter my boar. My two sows live together happily but I wouldn't say they were 'friends' like my two buns are. Do a boar and sow seem to like each other?

It's strange then that Millie is such a nervous little thing then? But as you say it may simply be her character, though I find most Himi's are very chilled. I suppose it depends on their breeding like any animal.

I think the neutered boar/sow thing was done to death on another thread and neutering topics seem to get quite emotive on here, so I'd advise you do a search ;)

In a nutshell, like most pairings, it depends on temperament. I'm very pro-neutering (males) and have many more positive experiences than otherwise. Feel free to pm me if you have any particular questions though that I might be able to help with :)

Barbara

They are gorgeous, I can see why you were tempted. And if you have room why not ;)

It is very very hard to let guineas go, especially at first. Once you have seen that good homes are available out there if you are careful and enforce a good policy then it becomes a bit easier. I have 30 guineas here that are permanent residents. I really can not keep any more but there are many in need of help, so I have to let them go. Only unwell guineas will be staying from now on, most of the 30 arrived gradually over the years until it became clear that they were going to keep coming, like the rabbits, and could not all stay. I won't let guineas that were here before I became a rescue go as I feel I had a contract with them to provide them with a forever home, and that is what they are going to get from me, despite the fact that there really are too many of them from the perspective of meaning more room for incoming rescues if they weren't here.

I think neutered boar/sow pairngs are generally very good, more consistantly good than sow/sow pairings, although sows can be very close to eachother. To my mind the ideal group is a neutered boar and two sows. That way the sows get both sorts of relationship and the boar is doubly happy, and the owner gets the full range of piggie behaviour and sounds. Pairs of boars can be very close too, and may interact more closely with their human hosts than a mixed group, but many will not survive having a sow within smelling distance, or even just seasonal changes in hormone levels.
