My guinea pig Dora has had chronic itching for about 3 months, she has been treated with 2 courses of ivermectin at the vets, one course of about 5 injections of a higher dose than the first. Not thread worm. The vet is scratching her head at Doras problem and next stage is biopsy which we don't really want to put Dora through unless last resort. We have made her a vest so that she doesn't scratch herself raw, and when she has it on she is fine. She eats well, squeaks well and pop corns with her play mate, Daffodil. Daffodil is healthy, no itching at all. The cage is cleaned very very regularly, and they have a lovely home here. I am at a loss to what to do now as really would love her not to wear her sock and for her to have her fur grow back. Has anyone else had any experience like my problem. ?/[email protected]

I am very sorry; that is distressing! Has she been treated for fungal? Otherwise, it could be an allergy? They are rare in guinea pigs, but not unheard of.

Poor girl. She must be so uncomfortable.

Has the vet done a skin scraping at all? I agreed with Wiebke that it may be fungal (even systemic fungal) or an allergy. Certainly, both should be considered.

What bedding is she on?
