hi everyone i have a problem with my 3 month old piggy Smokey,he is the size of a full grown piggy i can't stop him eating he is so fat,the worse thing is that he shares a cage with Bandit and Bandit is on the thin side,it seems Smokey is stealing most of the food I don't know what to do I have tried taking Smokey out to let Bandit eat but Bandit grazes all day where as Smokey eats a whole bowl within 30mins what should i do??:{

he looks normal sized to me. guinea pigs are grazing animals so it's normal for them to eat constantly. if you think one of them is stealing food from the other try dividing the food into two bowls so the other has a better chance of eating a fair share.

hi yes the photo is hard to tell but you can barely feel he has bones lol and generally his belly is bulging all the time but thanks for the advice i will try it will let you know how it go's;)

I love chunky pigs (as long as they are not unheathily obese).

My Blossom weighs in at 1300g and yes, she's big but she's fine. She's just a large pig. She's remained at that weight for just over a year now.

hi yes i love chunky piggies too.the scary thing is that Smokey and Bandit were brought at the same time and were the same size but now smokey is about 1/4 bigger so i think Bandit has missed out both are getting there own bowls today;)

^ but that doesn't mean they should put weight on at exactly the same time =]
if i was you i'd concentrate on making sure they're sharing their food than whether he's a normal weight, because he looks fine and angeladeedah's right, chunky pigs are awesome =D

Dry food is the main culprit of excessive weight gain, but at his age I wouldn't worry about limiting it just yet. Some piggies are naturally chunkier than others though, so I agree that the track to take is to get them to share - or make two food areas opposite ends of the cage so they can have their own space to eat.

Are you weighing them? Weekly weighing is a good thing to start if you're not already. Keeping record of weight gain gives you a good idea of what is normal for each pig, and what is a normal weight gain for each pig.

thanks ccc4 yes i have bowls at opposite ends.I know for sure that Smokey is over eating because all i can feel on Bandit is Bones compared to my other piggys but in every other way he is healthy i will keep an eye on him though;) well i have weighed them at mums but am currently trying to find scales that fit Boris on it as well he is all stretched out from his splint so i need reasonable sized scales that are acurate which I'm finding hard to find but will get a normal set for the others tomorrow so i can keep check on them;)

See, I know why Blossom is bigger - she eats more because she doesn't leave the side of the bowl when she's eatting whereas Daisy grabs a bit food then runs into her house to eat it. Then runs back out for another bit then back in again - she's constantly on the move.
