When you feed your piggies nuggets daily do you chuck your old ones away each day?

I have been doing this but it seems like such a waste when the piggies haven't eaten much of them... if their still clean should i leave them in their bowl until their all gone or should i carry on chucking them and putting in fresh ones? :hmm:

Thanks in advance!

x

I tend to chuck whats left away as it is easier than fishing out the bits of cardboard bedding etc. Generally though you can see the bottom of all the bowls so there isn't much left at all.

if you want to wash the bowl each day or keep the nuggets fresh each day, only 1/2 or 3/4 fill the bowl & that should save wasting nuggets :)

I always throw away any uneaten pellets from the day before, and replace with fresh pellets.

I feed Oxbow pellets, and they're not exactly cheap, so it does pain me to have to throw them away when my piggies haven't eaten them! But I just can't justify leaving stale pellets in their bowl.

I dont feed so many that there is any left each day :) if they're not eating them it's just a waste for their teeth I'd rather they ate more hay :)

Same here, I only feed the amount that will be eaten in a day and I feed it in two portions (this is roughly the amount recommended on the packaging). I'd rather not have them wasted and I think of them as a supplement to their main diet of hay and veg.

I've noticed I'm chucking a lot away... OH has a bad habit of filling the bowls to much and Rambo and Patch have decided they like to sit in the food bowls and ends up peeing in them too..

The thing that confuses me is, i weigh their nuggets out so they get 30g each but they still don't eat them all!

I think i might try giving a little less and if they eat them all give them a little top up?

I feed pellets in two small portions mornings and evenings after their veg, so I don't have a leftover problem. If you have to throw away a lot, then please reduce the amount you are feeding!

They dont need 30g a day if they're getting plenty of veg and good hay :-) it is possible to feed piggies without feeding any pellets at all so dont worry if they dont eat the whole amount the packets state (which IMHO is way too much for most brands) :D

Thanks guys, i thought they HAD to have that many pellets a day as it was said on the packet! :mal:

if it's not a requirement I'll cut down on how much they have, i feel like such an idiot!

I was confused as well as i read somewhere online that if your piggies aren't fully grown they should unlimited pellets, as some of mine are only 5 months old...

They should in theory if they're young but if they're not eating them then there is no point wasting them :-) in some countries babies grow up perfectly fine without any pellets x

It depends on what else you are feeding, but generally, the amounts on the bags are too high and are aimed for people who feed a little bit of veg only every few days.

They get a veggies everyday split in two servings and giant handfuls of fresh hay everyday in cage and they always have hay in their hay rack.

Today they had a romaine heart lettuce between the six of them, third of a cucumber, two carrots and a pepper.

^ that's between six piggies not each...

The only animal ive found that would eat given half a chance the amount on the bag is rabbits, greedy buggars if allowed to be at the expense of hay I feed an eggcup per day per bun :D

I meant to say roughly half the (maximum) amount recommended on the packaging! Though I don't normally weigh their food they just get a small handful twice a day so it's an approximation.

Mine come and go with their pellets, some day the bowl is empty and some they've barely touched it! If they haven't touched them then I tend to leave them in as I can see they're still clean and haven't been gone near but if it's closer to empty then I chuck the leftovers out and restock, that ways I've a better idea of how much they're eating. I don't get too concerned with their pellet intake though as they eat plenty of hay and veg :)

My skinny wees in his bowl:mal: so he gets a cleaned bowl each day but the others are better behaved however poos still find their way into bowls so i generally chuck mine daily

I am pretty sure mine are licking the bowl clean ever since I started giving them a mix of P@H, burgess mint and burgess oregano & blackcurrant instead of just P@H.

I don't know what it is like to have left overs nuggets!
