My guinea pig Cinnamon is currently 5 years of age and i noticed some strange things over the past 2 days
yesterday i noticed he does alot of teeth chittering even when I'm nowhere near his enclosure and he is drinking less water and losing weight quickly
this morning i noticed his back feet pads are bright red (obviously the start of bumblefoot), when he breathed there was a VERY subtle dull pop noise, he is constantly nibbling and scratching himself on different spots and he doesnt come running to my feet when i step into his cage like he used to he just stays in his hidey house.
I am worried about my piggy and i need to know if this is something i need to take very seriously.. obviously i will still do a vet visit

Hello and welcome to the forum. Please do have Cinnamon seen by a knowledgeable vet ASAP and start weighing him every morning and be prepared to step in and syringe feed him. A sudden drop in weight, nibbling and teeth chattering is a symptom of pain somewhere in the body. He could have mites or a more sinister illness.

The loss of weight is worrying and indicates he’s not eating enough hay.

Please do keep us updated. I hope he is ok x

I’m sorry to hear this

Yes sounds to be very unwell. This does need to be taken very seriously and he definitely needs to see a vet urgently.

All his symptoms suggest he is in pain - the teeth chattering can be a sign of discomfort and him biting on areas of his body suggest some internal pain.
It sounds like he does have bumblefoot - which is due to not moving enough (and that can be due to internal pain), it can also be due to circulation problems.
He sounds to be struggling with breathing issues, possibly a respiratory infection.
Losing weight means he is not eating enough hay and he is likely dehydrating.

You must step in with syringe feeding a recovery feed urgently. You must stop any further weight loss. He needs enough fibre rich feed going through his system to stop him going into stasis.

You will need to switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him every morning. This is your guide to ensure you are getting enough recovery feed into him each day. He will need at least 40ml per day but ideally 60ml.

Make sure you clean his cage several times a day to ensure he is always in dry bedding to help his feet

I’ve added guides in below which explain everything further.

I hope he is ok
