My poor boy has just got over a fungal infection (healed wonderfully and all the hair is coming back!). However, my girls were giving him a cuddle today and they asked me to come and look as he had a big lump on his side kind of under his front leg. I checked it and indeed he did have a big hard lump, and on closer inspection saw that he had a claw imbedded in him! He must be the most unlucky guinea pig. This can of only happened during the night, as he is petted and cuddled everyday. Firstly, he was very relieved for me to take it out as he did not struggle at all. It has left a pretty big hole, so I have washed, disenfacted and put on a dermagel (healing gel, fantastic stuff). I just don't know how anything got near him. The only thing I can think of is that during the night a cat got into the run area (he is in his house at night but it is in the run area), and clawed at this cage and at him. I thought at first it was the bully guinea pig, but as they are not together it can't be. Again it would have to of been through the cage as they are not let out together. Also he is not missing a claw!

Otherwise I am at a lose as to what has happened, apart from he is growing another foot! Any suggestions on what may of happened and has anyone else ever had this happen?

Please bring him indoors and make sure that his cage/run is fully predator proof before you return him and that he has got a refuge where is always safe. Is this run outdoors or indoors?

Have him checked by a vet and ask for an antibiotic in order to prevent an abscess. He may also need painkillers.

Sorry for not replying, but was in the process of moving house when all this happened! The wound was not infected, and has all healed very nicely. Still don't know exactly what it was. His new home has been thoroughly made predator proof.

I would see a vet asap
No thought as to the claw .
But I think you pig would be safer indoors
abiquite care and supervision, should stop any future such episodes
