cleaning feet

My guinea pig has been unwell and has been getting soft droppings lately. Because of this his feet have gotten really dirty, poop has stuck on his nails and hardened. 🙁
I wondered if anyone else has had this problem and if so, how'd you fix it?
I've tried wetting his feet with water and ribbing them, but the dirt is too hard.
 
You will need to soak his feet, not just wet them, and gently try to wipe the poop off. It may need several tries.

What type of bedding is he on?
Make sure to spot clean multiple times a day particularly, while he is unwell - hence my bedding question, some types are easier to manage when a piggy is poorly
 
I have cotton cloth under the hidey holes, around his cage I use puppy pads and sometimes bathmats.
