Hi all! I'm currently dealing with a mange mite infestation, and my boys have had one round of treatment with stronghold now. I'd read online that one dose would be enough, but my vet told me to reapply after about two weeks, and I think he's right, as one of them has really started scratching again.

I've read online that I need to deep clean everything while treating for mites, but I'm worried I didn't do it right first time round. I deep cleaned the cage the day after the treatment (as I thought that if I did so immediately, there would still be mites clinging to them), but now I'm worried I should have done so immediately after treating?

I have the second dose of stronghold at home and want to treat them this weekend, but should I clean everything before applying it to them, or after - and if after, straight after, or should I wait for an hour / a day / even longer? Many thanks in advance! :)

Hello. I had the same dilemma. I wasn’t sure either. So I decided to put on the treatment, then while they were out of the hutch, cleaned them out really well with F10 disinfectant. Then put them back in. Remember to throw away cardboard hides and anything else that you can’t disinfect as they can live there. Then two weeks later I did the same again and then two weeks after I did the same again (three treatments each two weeks apart. I used xeno not stronghold). So far so good. They haven’t come back. Also mine had mites but not specifically mange mites. Hope they clear up soon. 😃

Thanks so much for your advice, and I'm very glad you got rid of them! :)

Ivermectin treatments only kill live mites, so any eggs present are not caught by it and therefore hatch. This is why you then need the second treatment two weeks after the first so those now hatched mites are also caught. You then do a third treatment to ensure everything is gone.

Thanks! That’s what I read too, but my vet’s using selamectine (rather than ivermectin), and on websites like guinealynx I read that this is supposed to be a single treatment. That being said, I’ll of course follow his judgement, it’s just that I was a bit surprised 😊
