My guinea pigs stay in my room where I spend most of my time. Whenever I am around, I would leave one side of the cage open so I can easily reach out and interact with them. I always put the grid back before leaving the room.

However, my piggies are getting bigger and somehow big enough to flip over the plastic base and get out of the cage.

My room is where they have their floor time and therefore it is already set up as a safe environment for them to explore around freely. They have floor time twice a day, approx. 1 hour each, and they are always so chilled walking around and licking my toes.

However, I am a little bit unsure if I should discourage them from climbing out of the cage (by sealing all sides of the cage from now on) or if it is okay to let them come out as they feel like to (in my presence of course).

Is there anything they could get to when outside their cage? And is there any way they could escape the room - is the door always closed?

It’s a plain rectangular room and there is absolutely no hidden hole or whatever. The door is pretty heavy and always shut tightly.

If it’s entirely safe - no way for them to reach any wires or climb into things - then I guess it would be okay. You’d just have to be careful when entering the room.

It has been a week since I started letting my piggies coming out of the cage freely.
I put multiple hideaways, food trays and litter trays around the room so that they get what they need.
They now spend almost half of the time outside the cage - they just love hanging around so much :xd:
