I'm writing this to share my research on clippers for long-haired piggies. Mine *hate* scissors and so I wanted to try and have now found it's a million times easier! I spent ages researching on which to get but found that any forum suggestions were out of date or just mentioned dog-clippers so sharing my findings.
Recommended brands for clippers in the posts I saw seemed to be Andis and Wahl. I wrote to both companies to ask what would be best for guinea pigs.
Andis recommended: Envision Cordless Clipper Pet but I couldn't find this in the UK. Maybe good for those in the US.
Wahl recommended Brahmin Rechargeable Batter Animal Trimmer or Mini Arco Cord/Cordless Animal Trimmer - I found these both cheaper on non-wahl websites, both were available in the UK.
Of those the Mini Arco got better reviews so I went for that in the end. Expensive but we had the first trim yesterday and it was amazing! The clippers were pretty quiet, one girl still got a little skittish but still better than with scissors the other actually just sat and let me cut her hair which has never happened before. Soo much easier, quicker, less stressful for my girls (and me!) and they both look very glam now.
Advice seems to be to clean/oil them a lot to keep the blades in good working order - I mention as some complain they go blunt fast so I'm hoping this will help.
The very lovely people at AllGroom in New Zealand recommended the Shernabo Professional 5 in 1 cordness trimmer for those south of the equator (I didn't realise what country they were in when I emailed)
They also shared with me this very helpful and funny video on how to trim long piggie hair: The Better Way to Trim the Hair of yur Long Haired Guinea Pig. From Saskia from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue.
And please save guinea pig hair and put it out for the birds during nesting season (provided piggies have not been recently treated with ivermectin) - the little birds, robins, great tits, blue tits etc love it and it's very cute watching them gather it up in their beaks as they look like they have little santa beards by the end
