Oscar's nails are getting very long and sharp and I was wondering at what age a piggie's nails can be clipped. At the moment he's a few days shy of being 3 months old.

Thanks
Marty

I am assuming aslong as they are long enough to cut without cutting the quick then there is no minimum age? Wait for someone else to come along first but I don't see why he wouldn't be old enough ;)

Marty have you tried using an emery board to just file off the points? Had a reasonable amount of success doing this to a couple of mine when they were little.

Thanks both

Jane, we heard that you shouldn't cut the nails when they are too young as they can split or soften and it can cause damage :)

Caviesgalore, yup, just tried that but he yelped and squealed and looked so miserable we caved ::)

Aren't we big softies, mine don't even have to whimper and I chicken out sometimes ;D ;D. Can't think of anything else to suggest.

i seem to get to cut everyone pigs nails... my aunt said i obviously didnt have a heart :D
i had to cut brownies at 6 weeks because they were so long they were turning in... some people have suggested (on other threads ive read) letting them run on some concrete... but it would be too cold for mine to go outside for that so i just clipper away.... if they need done theres nothing u can do about it, regardless of their age...

i hold them tight into my belly with the arm i have the clippers in, they bury their head and dont get so aggitated that way.... then they kick out the back legs and let me get on with it... lol i have to cut the back ones about 10 times more often than the front...
if they do play up stroke them the normal way till they calm back down again....
maybe try some practise runs, where u hold them this way and just examine their legs... mine got their feet massaged...and they loved it

Phew, nails now cut, Julie kept him occupied with a carrot whilst I trimmed them. :)

I managed to cut about 5 of Jeremy's tonight, naughty wriggly boy. They are a mess to be honest, and I think he has spurs growing too. Are these Ok to trim? They are like brown hard bits of skin..

I don't know Katie, we've not experienced that with any of our boys. How old is Jeremy?

You can start trimming from whenever really however if you just file them quite early on it does get them growing well from the start. Mine have a rock in front of their water bottle so whenever they drink it helps wear down their front claws and as a result I never need to do more than file the points off the front but the back get a good doing every month...

I think they can be trimmed as long as you're careful O0

Yes katiep, you can just trim them....

With some piggies, its a lot easier just to file more often than clip them :-\

I dont have any problem clipping them anymore, could do it in my sleep ;D ;D (not that I would :o ) ;D
